KDE has always included support for multiple workspaces 1,2,3,4,etc.
--- these were switchable via a [ 1][ 2][ 3][ 4] on the default panel.

I cannot find this in the available widgets.

How can I get this function back into Plasma 5
-----(or even with an 'aftermarket' app if I have to)

It still does.
You can configure the number of virtual desktops in Systemsettings->Workspace Behavior->Virtual Desktops.

It's still there, and it should be in the panel by default.

But if only 1 workspace is configured (KDE's default), it is hidden. So add another workspace and it should appear.

The exact same behavior is in KDE4 since years already.

Btw, the widget is called "Pager"... ;)
