Hello everyone,
I am experiencing an issue with VLC, where it crops 3/4 of the video and displays the remaining quarter in the upper left corner, leaving the rest of the window black. The problem applies to window mode, maximized and full screen. Putting output to "OpenGL video output (experimental)" appears to work, but playback is poor. VLC 3 beta works better, but beta issues apply. Kaffeine properly plays all videos, so it's clearly a VLC/Plasma 5.4 issue. I have now reverted back to Plasma 5.3.2, where everything works. My update approach to Plasma 5.4 was to switch system packages to the Frameworks5 and Qt5 repos in YaST2. I haven't seen this issue reported anywhere and am wondering if others are experiencing it? Thank you. |

I noticed the same. Windowed mode works fine unless you make the window larger, and fullscreen mode is broken completely. It seems to be unrelated to Plasma 5.4, I experience the same problem in IceWM e.g. And the recently released Kaffeine 1.3 (which uses VLC as backend) does not have this problem, so the issue seems to be with VLC's (Qt5) GUI. I am suspecting an issue or incompatibility with Qt 5.5 therefore, also since this only started recently (double-clicking to switch to full screen suddenly stopped working too btw...). PS: I do experience the same problem with the 3.0 beta too. |

I tested VLC 3 beta only briefly, maybe 10 minutes with a handful of videos. There were numerous glitches, but I assumed they were caused by beta issues. That may be incorrect. On my system the behaviour was also erratic. Sometimes a restart would help, other times idiosyncratic resizing of the window would "work." Smaller videos, up to 100-200 mb maybe, seemed less affected whereas larger files of several GBs were always affected. Maybe I should stay with 5.3.2 for now. On a side note, Wolfi, do you know if/when 5.4 will be moved to the Main Update Repo? Thanks. |

Probably never, as normally only bugfix and security updates are released in the Update repo. I don't know the exact plans though, 5.3.2 has been released as official update too although 13.2 originally shipped with 5.1. But I wouldn't really expect it. |

The problem is that 5.4 needs a whole slew of updated frameworks and those would need to get updated first. I'm not sure if this is doable.

Just in case somebody else with the same problem finds this, it is also being discussed here:
https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread. ... nSUSE-13-2 In short, the problem is definitely related to Qt 5.5. (no idea whether it is a bug in VLC or in Qt though) A workaround is to switch to VLC's "Skins" interface (in Tools->Preferences->Interface enable "Use custom skin"), this makes the problem disappear. |

I was getting this in Kubuntu 15.10 with the backports to get KDE 5.5.
All of the video modes cropped out the bottom and right (well ascii worked but that doesn't count). I fixed it by setting deinterlacing to On. Edit: Nope, it started cropping again on the next video. ****. |

The problem originally talked about here was a regression in Qt 5.5. https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-48321 Upgrading to 5.6 should fix it, or ask your distribution to add this patch to their Qt 5.5 packages: https://codereview.qt-project.org/#/c/139066/ Btw, a workaround is to use VLC's skin interface by activating the option "Use custom skin" in its "Interface" settings, or disable "Integrate video in interface" (as I wrote already). |
