Other than setting a different image for each monitor, is there a way i can just specify a 2 monitor wide image and span it across both monitors. Similar to what windows does when you set the wallpaper image to span.

That's not possible with the current Plasma architecture.
Each "desktop" is an independent containment which isn't aware of the internals of the desktop containments on other screens.
