Hi,
when i installed kubuntu 15.04 it came with kde 5.2.2 and i installed as default english language and as 2nd and 3rd languages: french and SLovak since i upgraded kde plasma to 5.3.x i have in Regional settings > Translation > available language = nothing. and only english language appears in preferred language...no more french and slovak. Moreover i had in systray (close to digital clock) a language switcher to change easily language...now it disappeared too. I got feedback that this issue is solved in kubuntu 15.10, however after upgrading to 15.10 and kde 5.4.2 i still have the same issue. so how to fix it ? thx

Hmmm, "kcmshell5 translations" seems to read the list from /usr/share/X11/locale/locale.alias here, which would be provided by "libx11-data" (what does not seem to be any dependency in kubuntu?)

i have a strange behavior on the content of my /usr/share/X11/locale/locale.alias file.
i have several empty lines... 45 at the beginning and it seems the content is twice the same. Moreover several empty lines ONLY empty (not commented lines) are through the file.

The file is rather sparse here as well - as long as you have it and it contains some (most importantly sk_) aliases, that's not the problem.
Do you just miss the message translations? Eg. do you have /usr/share/locale/sk/LC_MESSAGES/kwin.mo ? |

In fact i do not have any kwin.mo in :
sk/LC_MESSAGES or in fr/LC_MESSAGES i'm under kubuntu 15.10 so is there any link to this OS or is a particular string translations file from KDE 5.3/5.4?

i reset all ppa to besure not such thing can be...but i have the same behavior on 3 different computers..
- after upgrading from 15.04 (kde 5.2.2) to kde 5.3.x, - after upgrading from 15.04 (kde 5.2.2) to 15.10 (kde 5.4.2) - after upgrading from 15.04 (kde 5.3.1) to kde 5.4.2 using ppa here is my /etc/apt/sources.list content
and doing a:
i did a:
and next a:
so kwin.mo files are installed but i have a weird behavior... except the fact that slovak and french languages are still not available, the window title region disappears on each application.

if i install gnome desktop, everything works well...languages, windows behavior etc...
so problem is really linked to kde unfortunatelly. to get back windows behavior i have to type a "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop"....but language issue is still there

> sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop Mess between KDE4 and KDE5 installation? The only "interesting" files the kcm opens here seem to be open("/usr/share/X11/locale/locale.alias", O_RDONLY) = 10 open("/usr/share/X11/locale/locale.dir", O_RDONLY) = 10 open("/usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/XLC_LOCALE", O_RDONLY) = 10 open("/home/loki/.config/plasma-localerc", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE|O_CLOEXEC) = 10

I do not know how it could be a mess between KDE4 and KDE 5 as in kubuntu 15.04, KDE 5.2.2 is by default the DE.
so i would rather say, mess between KDE 5.2.2 and KDE 5.3/5.4. Update/upgrade to KDE 5.4.x really did not work as expected. you can find the result of your strace command line at
Kubuntu 22.04 / kernel 5.15.x

Files from KDE SC4 (you still totally have it) override some from KF5 - it's apparently an installation bug (I have *all* languages available and *not* installed any kde-l10n-* packages.
Please redirect the output, one can't read anything on that tiny screenshot

Your distro update seem to have nuked your /etc/locale.gen - check it and ensure fr_FR and sk_SK are not commented (you'll likely want the UTF-8 variants), then run "locale-gen" as root.
Still, that alone doesn't explain the absence of all locales in the list. |
