To create a new link to an application/program, you right-click and say "new" --> "link to program".
From Plasma 5.4.3 on, the 'Program'-Tab is now missing, to define, which program you want to link to. Plasma 5.4.2 was still ok.

I use openSUSE Tumbleweed.
Therefore, I`m not sure, if I understand your help. Please write some details ... Seems, that I can additional install the missing application-tab, is that right? |

You should already have the mentioned items then. But it seems there was a misunderstanding here. Rog131 was talking about the "Create New" entry which you should already have if you are using openSUSE Tumbleweed. You miss the "Applications" tab in the properties dialog, right? Strange, I do have it here with Plasma 5.4.3/KF 5.16.0 on openSUSE 13.2 with the latest packages from KDE:Frameworks5 (i.e. what is in Tumbleweed). Maybe try to run "kbuildsycoca5 --noincremental" (as user), but I'm not sure that this has an influence. |

You are trying to
Edit a desktop file from the file manager / plasma folder view ? i.e Dolphin/Folder view > Properties > Application Rights At here, If I don't have the read rights to file then the 'Application' tab is missing. Without access rights With access rights A minimum A text file with lines:
Will get the 'Application' tab from the Dolphin/Folder view > Properties More of the desktop files; http://standards.freedesktop.org/deskto ... 01s02.html |

No effect with this command, but Program-Tab still missing. Sorry. |

No, I try to create a new desktop-link for an application from scratch. It doesn't depend on the read/write-permission of any file. I reinstalled the package, which contains the desktop-templates (linkProgram.desktop, etc.), found it in
but without any positive effect. But is this really part of Plasma 5? I created another fresh user for testing with a new desktop, but the bug was there too. Seems to be a deeper problem. |

That's the KDE4 version, and not used by Plasma5. But your problem is not that the template is missing anyway, otherwise you would not have the menu entry to create an application link at all.
Yes. As I said, I have that tab here on openSUSE 13.2 with Plasma 5.4.3/Frameworks 5.16.0. Can you please post a .desktop file created via the template? As rog131 mentions, it needs to contain a line "Type=Application" to make that tab appear. If it's not there, try to add it manually with a text editor, does the "Application" tab show up then? |

@wolfi323
Creating a desktop-link with the GUI (without application-tab), I get the error message:
Then, plasma restarts for a second and shows the desktop again. I wrote a file manually with the two lines Rog131 posted. Opening the properties shows the application-tab successfully. I searched the PC via 'locate'. There is no directory called 'new-templates' at all, and no directory '.source', exept '/usr/share/kde4/templates/.source'. |

Ok.
I solved the problem in an unconventional way. Reverted to my last backup with Plasma 5.4.2 and saw, there was a directory
and
I copied them and made my update to Plasma 5.4.3. The /usr/share/templates-directory had vanished, maybe was deleted by the update. Now, I put the copy of this directory to it's old place and .... who wonders ... ... the problem was solved. Nevertheless, thanks to all of you and your help! |
