I couldn't find anything on this in a forum search, but it seems a relatively simple issue...
In Unity I found it very easy to set up an external monitor - if it looks wrong when you plug it in, go to Display settings, and change the resolution/aspect ratio until it's right. However, in Plasma 5 I don't seem to have the option to change the resolution..? is this by design or a bug? My laptop has a 1600x900 screen and the external is 1280x1024, but it won't let me change the external resolution from 1024x768, which obviously makes the display stretched and pixelly. Even if there's no way to change this in the GUI System Settings, if someone can suggest a config file to edit so that it uses 1280x1024, I would be very grateful! Qt: 5.4.2 KDE Frameworks: 5.15.0 kubuntu 15.10 (sorry for spamming the forums with lots of questions, I recently switched from Unity to KDE so I'm having to learn everything all over again!)

"kcmshell5 kscreen", but it seems weird that the wrong resolution is picked and no other even available - what's the output of "xrandr -q"?

so... this time when I plugged it in to check xranr -q, it worked correctly.
Now I have a slider in System Settings>Display Configuration, and I can choose the correct resolution. Thanks for your help anyway (again!) this is the output from xranr -q if it's still relevant, but I hope it will just stay fixed from now on: Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 2624 x 900, maximum 32767 x 32767 eDP1 connected primary 1600x900+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 309mm x 174mm 1600x900 60.00*+ 1440x900 59.89 1368x768 60.00 1360x768 59.80 59.96 1152x864 60.00 1280x720 60.00 1024x768 60.00 1024x576 60.00 960x540 60.00 800x600 60.32 56.25 864x486 60.00 800x450 60.00 640x480 59.94 720x405 60.00 640x360 60.00 DP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) HDMI1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) HDMI2 connected 1024x768+1600+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 376mm x 301mm 1280x1024 60.02 + 75.02 1024x768 75.08* 60.00 800x600 75.00 60.32 640x480 75.00 60.00 720x400 70.08 VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
