Kubuntu 15.10, 64bits, fresh install. SSD drive.

Steps to problem:

Create new user with adduser. Either use the K menu for a new session, or Ctrl Alt F1, login, and startx. Either way, the bar goes up to 80 or 90%, and then there is no sign of life. Drive appears inactive, but it's hard to tell because the loading screen, although certainly artistic, is utterly uninformative, and I can't change session with CTRL+ALT+Fx, or really do anything other than crash with REISUB. (Note: my main user works fine).

Digging a little, I found .xsession-errors, which seems pertinent, given below. Can anyone make sense of it ? The " !! An error occurred while running '/bin/sh'" looks especially strange to me.

Failing a solution, I'd a least like a way to render the loading process more informative (There used to be text back in 2008 or so, so you saw what was happening; then it was hidden, but you could press ESC to see it; then it disappeared altogether. Amusingly, I never had problems with sessions before.), and escaping the freeze without crashing the whole system.

Sounds like a kernel freeze, looking at the xsession log, likely in the nouveau driver.
Try to disable the compositor for the user.

For a general resolution, you might want to use the binary nvidia driver. Plasma/5 is very GL intense and nouveau still has certain deficits itr.

Ah, just got that this is an *additional* session. Disable the compositor or at least suspend (SHIFT+Alt+F12) it in the old session (if you want to continue using nouveau)

I don't quite know what the final "itr" means (context implies a variant of atm, "at the moment"?), but switching drivers not only solved my problem, it also shaved about 5 seconds off of my loading time -- there was always a pause at the 80% point. The initial loading animation is smoother as well. I did think that it took a bit more time than it ought to, given my shiny new SSD...

I had a probably unrelated Plasma crash with my encrypted-home user, but this time I could navigate sessions, and it was resolved painlessly.
