Hi I just installed Plasma 5 on Linux Mint 17.2 to try if my laptop can handle it because it was doing just fine with the default one from the distro , only because I had some
issues with kdeconnect mostly with browsing android files from the computer, but somehow i've managed to change the track i was listening on my laptop from the phone, (which i think is pretty awesome) anyways, after upgrading Plasma workspace to latest stable version kdeconnect totally stoped , did a reboot and when i logged in some applications was missing from the tray and most of the ones that appear seems not to respond. At least got terminal and internet browser still acting normal. Any Idea what could I do to make it work or my only way is to go to Kubuntu?

I probably can't help you but it seems you should provide added info:
- what ppa and what command did you issue to upgrade Plasma? - what tray apps don't work and if they can be run in Konsole do they work? - do non-tray apps function correctly? - have you tried deleting the tray and adding a new one? as the tray is just a widget - does a new user have these issues? ps - moved to Plasma 5 forum |

I ran the following lines with no errors:
As for the tray apps it first was randomly like Synaptic Pack Manager and Dolphin on a session or any app on a reboot , and sometimes the desktop just was freezing on chromium even though browsing seemed fully functional. After several restarts of plasma the desktop was entirely disobeying any command though pretending so. Tried a guest user with no significant result. Though when plasma starts sometimes i noticed brief message on the top right corner of the screen that says something like ' virual box cannot start' but then submerge and desktop starts loading. |

is VirtualBox installed? Why would it be automatically attempting to start?
what is "submerge"? try running Ksysguard as soon as possible and add the IO read & IO write columns (right click on a column header) and see if the issue is cpu or i/o. Alternatively you can run in 2 Konsole windows htop (for cpu) and iostat (for io). |

Can you run "dolphin" from the terminal input (xterm? konsole?) and if not, what's the output?

Isn't Mint 17.2 based on Ubuntu 14.04? If so, the kubuntu-backports ppa would not have any Plasma 5 packages in it, as they are not available for this version. Unless I am missing something here, just updated KDE 4 software.

Well,
I didn't install VirtualBox at the time the mentioned message emerged ( popped out + neg. = submerge ), consequently I did install VB 5.0.14 ( works fine) - message gone. It is though unusual or just my vision needs some calibration But this is new: http://imgur.com/a/IJBb8 Ksysguard showed nothing abnormal : CPU usage within the 5-10% and almost no activity in the io write / read columns. htop output - same numbers - about 30% memory used and under 1% swap. As for iostat got the message:
The terminal works fine ( using "guake" terminal) "dophin" - starts, "konsole" - starts, "xterm" - starts; along with the media and graphic apps I've tried. Though got this:
plus got no control over the windows : no window buttons , can't resize or move, no mouse options as well. Mouse is fully active in the browser where at the moment screen is stuck. No panel no workspaces. As it has something to do with the visualization. I'm not 100% sure but I think you're right, Mint 17.2 is based on Ubuntu Trusty 14.04, but I'm pretty sure it did install something causing everything to be a bit messy. Apparently you absolutely right claydoh as it is impossible to upgrade Plasma 5 on Mint 17x or any Ubuntu 14 based distros at the moment. So is there a way to make the KDE 4 to work with the existing Plasma, or to turn back to the old configuration of KDE ? |

Means there's no WM running. Try "kwin_x11 --replace &" or, for KDE4 "kwin --replace &" and see what happens. |

That's something :
the panel is visible and functional again, maybe desktop too, still no window control. |

can you test as a new user? if that works then your account has a config issue else you might have some type of system corruption from the upgrade

The new user seems to have fixed it. Plasma is back in the business
Thanks for the tips. |
