Hello everyone.
Yesterday I updated kde plasma to 5.5.4 using the kubuntu backports ppa. None of the desktop effects are working after the update( desktop cube animation, wobbly windows, window minimize, screen edges etc...)
How can I fix that?
Or is there anyway to update to 5.6 in order to fix the problem?
Thank you in advance.

1st make sure compositing is enabled in systemsettings and that the rendering back end is set to OpenGL, if not enable them and click apply and then restart Kwin
Code: Select all
kwin_x11 --replace

if that doesn't fix it then post your graphics information (gpu and drivers)

fyi - upgrading to 5.6.x is Kubuntu dependent and isn't shipped yet except as a beta.

Hello and thank you for your answer.
compositing is enabled and the rendering back end is set to OpenGL.

my gpu is Nvidia GeForce GT 630 and I use 352 recommended driver
When I run kwin_x11 --replace I received the following

never used virtualization so no idea as to what works and what is required to make it work but compositing is not initializing

see viewtopic.php?f=111&t=126249#p334209

is 3d acceleration enabled?

please note that you're running under virtualization when posting issues with graphics

by saying virtualization you mean that my installation is on a virtual pc? If yes then why do you say that? the setup that we are talking about is on physical hardware...

OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.6, 128 bits)

so I figured ................................

so what gpu and drivers are installed?

https://askubuntu.com/questions/583640/ ... n-llvmpipe
sounds as if your hardware does not support 3d graphics directly with the nvidia driver , thus falls back to llvm pipe.

seems you probably have an issue with your card/drivers, you could try reinstalling the drivers, wait for someone more knowledgeable to respond or post/search on the *buntu forums

ohhh didnt see that.

I dont know if it is a driver related issue because when I run glxinfo | grep "OpenGL"
I get this

we're out of my knowledge base as I don't use Kubuntu but I would suggest reinstalling the driver and/or trying a slighlty earlier version of available

from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Binar ... cs_Chipset
Driver Not Active
X has not been configured to use the new driver. Open a terminal, run sudo nvidia-xconfig, and restart X (reboot works).

Either Qt or KWin (or ideally both, you cannot intermix this) was compiled against GLES, so the relevant output is that of "es2_info" - and that's *extremely* fishy.
Qt will likely be compiled against GLX, so my estimation is that the 3rd party kwin package from that ppa (link?) will link GLES - and that's not compatible.

Also compare the outputs of
ldd /usr/lib/libkwineffects.so | grep -i libgl
and
ldd /usr/lib/libQt5Gui.so | grep -i libgl

If one says GLX and the other GLES, that's no good.

Thank you so much. I used the kwin_compose environmental variable and set it to O2, and everything is working.
