Weather widgets' problems

Mon Mar 28, 2016 7:49 am
Hi guys,

I just wanted to ask about a couple of problems I have with two of the available weather widgets on Plasma 5.

First, Yahoo Weather Widget. This was working normally until about 2 weeks ago, I think it stopped working when I upgraded to Plasma 5.6 (although it could be a few days before that). Now the widget only displays an error: "Error 1. Please check your network". I did not change any settings or anything, this happens on both my box and laptop running Leap and Tumbleweed, respectively). Any ideas on how to get more information about this and find out what's wrong?

Second, the new "Weather Forecast" plasmoid that came shipped with 5.6. It seems I can only get forecasts from cities in the US, which is not very useful to me as I live in Greece. Is there any way to get forecasts for other cities or is it a matter of which provider we are currently using? Or perhaps the system's language settings (currently set to US English?).

Also, a small usability suggestion for this plasmoid: I think that when the plasmoid settings screen is open and we are searching for cities, the default target button should be "Select" and not "OK" (or "Cancel"?). Currently, when I type a city and hit enter, the settings screen simply closes, I think the default behaviour after typing a city name and hitting enter should be to search the city list, instead of having to click "Search" using the mouse. It took me a few minutes before I realised that this is the intended behaviour and not a bug.

Kind regards,

Angelos

1st Yahoo is a 3rd party widget and its been reported to the dev on kde-look.org http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Ya ... ent=164194

2nd weather widget is a 1st iteration of the port see https://frinring.wordpress.com/2016/03/ ... /#comments and is being enhanced

Hi !

The 'Yahoo! Weather Widget' is from the KDE Apps: http://kde-apps.org ie. Yahoo! Weather Widget: http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/Ya ... ent=164194

Quoting from the KDE apps page:
Widget stopped working...
Yahoo API changed, now requires OAuth1...
Is there a way to fix this or do we wait for an upgrade?...
Program an update and make a pull request on GitHub? :)....

KDE Plasma "Weather Forecast" widget:

- dataengine cleanup: https://git.reviewboard.kde.org/r/127248/
- Planet KDE: https://planetkde.org/ -> A blog: https://frinring.wordpress.com/2016/03/ ... lasma-5-6/

Readers comments/questions
Hi,

any chance to add support weather data from the open data initiatives ?

Yes, there is a chance: the weather widget uses the data it gets from the weather dataengine which is part of the plasma-workspace repo (so part of a default Plasma5 installation). And that dataengine uses a plugin system to adapt to all different kind of weather services. There is a public interface for that. I have already started to write a blog post about it, calling for further plugins for the weather dataenginge..

You could file wishes/bugs to the KDE bug tracking system: https://bugs.kde.org. Latest weather widget bug report (now) is https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=361071

Thanks to both of you for the answers. Rog131, you really didn't have to go through all the trouble of copying the comments, but thanks anyway!

It should have occurred to me to check out kde-apps.org, I knew Yahoo Weather widget was third party.

It seems the providers currently supported by the Weather Forecast widget do not provide data for most European cities, so I will just have to wait for Plasma 5.7 I guess.

Thanks for all the help!
