Hello!

When starting gnome I still get akonadi running in the background, also kalarm auto-starting though the korganizer setting is to not start the reminder (setting seems to be ignored - no effect in KDE either...)

I checked and there are no entries in ~/.config/ in the folders "autostart" or "autostart-scripts" or "plasma-workspace"...
I deleted everything in .config/session also...


So how to make sure KDE background applications do not run in gnome until necessary?

Check also for entries in /etc/xdg/autostart or similar paths.
