Is KDE becoming form over function?
I don't know if the developing of plasma widgets are not a priority or if the people who work on them think they are good enough. If I were to judge a widget, I would do so in these categories: - are they integrated with the theme? - do they provide quick access to a function? - do they provide a quick way to show information? - can they provide value without interaction? A good example of this would be network-manager widget. It is integrated with the theme. You can click on it to change network etc. The icon changes, so you can see if you are connected or trying to connect, and thus provide value without interaction. A bad example would be the battery widget. You can click on it to show information like battery percentage, time left etc, but why can't you tell the battery percentage without interaction? What I would find as the two most valuable informations would be if the battery is charging or discharging and the estimated charge of the battery. The android battery widget is a decent example of how it could be done. But other things stand out as well. The calendar does not sync with korganizer (or any other calendar for that matter). It shows the date, but is that really what people would look at in a calendar widget? Even a simple solution, where launching korganizer when clicking on the widget would be better than this. I have seen that someone else in the community have made a calendar which is a huge improvement, but that cannot sync with korganizer either. Are these issues not the most relevant things when it comes to widgets? |
