o looks like iv already asked this question a year ago with zero answers viewtopic.php?f=19&t=137284. I shall leave this up since this is a completely new computer, a new installation of KDE, new version of Mint, plasma, kernel etc.

Please advise.

you might not have asked in the right place? I have moved the topic to the Plasma 5 forum.

FWIW, current stable Plasma release is 5.9.4, you might want to upgrade to see if this is not already solved.

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

Hi, Sorry all i know is if the update manage tells me there is an update, but its all up to date. However there are some "sudo apt update" (which has a few but im guessing these are unstable updates which I have switched off in the auto update manager atm)

Unstable updates are not in the usual repositories, those would be in Beta which is not a selectable item in the Discover settings, you really need to activate all the regular update paths, especially the Universe repository as all Plasma and KDE related packages are in there.

FWIW: you apparently still run Xenial, which is the previous release, Plasma 5.9.4 is in Zesty.

Thx but i dont understand any of that really.

This is a new installation of mint 18.1 kde , I have allowed unstable packages and i have kubuntu backports listed in my PPA's.

how do i do that exactly ?

I just recently downloaded the latest mint KDE , i dont know how it can be out of date ?

Well, Mint is a Ubuntu spin-off, if you want a recent Plasma desktop you would have to go with a pure Kubuntu.
Since I don't know what package manager they use on Mint, nor which exact sources you use on it that very much limits the amount of help I can be of, here. Have you tried to ask your distribution directly?

/etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu-defaults.list:deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu xenial main

The package manager is apt or synaptic or anything that works on ubnuntu or deb, I dont think there is anything different apart from the GUI (software manager) but thats just a gui.
