We seem to be having a problem where items don't show in the start menus unless you delete the entries cached in ./local/share/applications
This is openSUSE15. We add entries like something.desktop to /usr/share/applications and some show up in the kicker menu and some do not

Did you use option: right mouse click on menu icon and choose edit programs?
