I like full screen mode for applications. However, I also like to have access to my auto-hidden panel. Is there a way to do this, perhaps via setting shortcut somewhere?

Instead of full-screen mode, I now use window-decoration-hiding and menubar hiding. That gives almost the same result and leaves the rest of the desktop environment functioning as normal.
