Since the last update (5.15 KDE update) the desktop comes up with 800x600. If you use the KDE settings to change the resolution, it does resize for a second and then falls back. You can choose "View-Resize Virtual Machine", but you can't use the KDE settings panel. On each new reboot you will get back to 800x600. Tested it on two different computer and VM's and same issue. Here tried on VMware Fusion 11.x and 10.x. Was working fine before that. Experienced on both, Arch Linux and on the current KDE Neon Distro.
journalctl shows the following during the resize attempt:

I had big hopes the the 5.15.1 or 5.15.2 updates would fix this, but it hasn't. As mentioned, I am mostly also posting it here, as I've experienced it both on Arch as also on Neon distro and both were working fine with Plasma versions prior to 5.15.x

Also confirmed with OpenSuse and Kubuntu and definitely related to the 5.15.x release and only happening on VMware (Tested on Fusion 10.x and 11.x). Virtualbox continues to work normally.
Not sure what else I can provide to try to figure out and fix the issue. |

Disabling the "KScreen 2" Service under Background Services gets things working.
Noticing the same issue on Ubuntu, using the kubuntu-backports PPA. Whether VMWare is set to change the resolution of the VM or not, I cannot change the resolution in KDE. It will change for a second, then change back to what it was before. This is with both `xrandr` on the command line or using the System Settings app. |

I am seeing the same error when trying to increase resolution from the default 800X600 to 1440x900. The screen size increases to the new value momentarily and then returns to the default value. I also noticed the same behaviour whether using the graphic settings or the terminal.
Update: as the previous poster suggested, the solution lies in the KScreen 2 service. In system settings, under workspace, I found the startup shutdown services, then unchecked Kscreen 2. When I ran xrandr in the terminal, the new settings stayed. |
