I've developed new quick launch replacement by modifying tiled menu.

Or in plasma by unlocking widgets->'Add widgets'->'Get New Widgets'->'Download new plasma widget'.
ALT+RIGHT click to resize like in tiled menu.

There is no search and any fancy space eating features. Just pinning shortcuts like in standard quicklaunch.
Now I can put and group all my shortcuts and save more space on taskbar.
