Panels lost on boot

Tue May 05, 2020 6:25 am
Hi.
I've been using KDE for more than 20 years without important problems, but in the last two months I'm facing this issue with the plasma desktop: about every four or five boots all panels get lost.

I'm using only one HDMI monitor

The behavour is as follows
  • In plasmashellrc are defined the following screens:
    Code: Select all
    [ScreenConnectors]
    0=HDMI-A-0
    1=:0.0
  • When everything is ok, every panel has lastScreen=0 in plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc.
  • And sometimes, after login, every panel goes to lastScreen=1 and disappears.

I've made a backup of plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc and, when this happens, I restore the backup an reset X11 as a workaround, but any change that I've made from the backup is lost.

I've tried to delete the second screen from plasmashellrc but doesn't work as in the next boot it's again there.

I've searching in all the logs and several forums and I don't know where I can find the reason for this change and getting my panels working properly.

My system is as follows:
  • Distribution: Arch Linux
  • Plasma version: 5.18.4
  • Kde framework version: 5.69.0
  • Qt verson: 5.14.2
  • Kernel version: 5.4.38-1-lts
  • OS type: 64 bits
  • Processor: Ryzen 3400G
Thanks

Do you save your session on logout?

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

No.

I always start with an empty session.

I've made several tests trying to find the reason for lastScreen changing from 0 to 1 in plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsr file:
  • Changing the panels visibility options: autohide, always visible, ...
  • Using default panels, empty panels, ...
  • Changing the desktop background
  • Using several themes: oxigen, breeze, ...
  • Using empty and saved sessions.

But nothing works and still can't find any logfile to find out the reason.

As KDE is highly customizable, I've made a pre KDE start and a post KDE stop scripts for saving an restoring the plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc file on every computer turn on and off.

I hope this works.

This has been a problem for years now. Here's one of many bug reports on this issue:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=416739

So far no solution in sight. We still have to live with it.

There's some light in the tunnel:
A patch is now available that fixes this. I suspect it's just a matter of time before we'll see it in practice.

The thread about it: https://www.mail-archive.com/kde-bugs-d ... 84655.html
The patch in question: https://invent.kde.org/genpfault/plasma ... f866d880ad
