After some software update, which I can't identify (if it was kernel or kde), the following problem started.
The desktop freezes with only the mouse being movable. The windows are as I left them however I cannot click on anything. It has happened that it also froze while I was playing some game (so not only during inactivity). It doesn't happen always however. Sometimes the screen goes normally to lock. I run an Arch Linux 5.8.1-zen1-1-zen Qt 5.15.0 plasma 5.19-4 nvidia proprietary drivers (450.57). I don't know if it is Arch related or KDE, but if I switch to a terminal ( Ctrl+Alt+Fx) and kill the plashell and startplasma-x11 processes, plasma restarts and everything goes back to normal. So my first guess would be KDE (hence the post). My journalctl -r output at the time of the crash usually looks like this (this is the user output)
I looked around and found similar problems, however way older (my KDE worked fine for almost 5 months) and without solution (Like Bug #359489). Would anyone have any idea what is wrong, or what other log could I look? I thank you in advance. |

I have the same problem. Usually I'm in the middle of doing something so my primary goal is just to restore functionality and get back to what I was doing, so I haven't reported it. 🤐 I work around it the same way you did: by switching to a terminal and restarting plasmashell. I'm not sure what causes it, but it is certainly disruptive. Next time it happens I'll post what my logs say. I've noticed some applications cause it more than others, the one that seems to cause it the most for me is when I'm running World of Warcraft (retail) in wine, but it happens with other non-3D applications too.
I'm using KDE Neon which is based on Ubuntu, so I doubt it is something with Arch specifically. Also, here is my Info center output just to compare and contrast: Operating System: KDE neon 5.19 KDE Plasma Version: 5.19.5 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.74.0 Qt Version: 5.15.0 Kernel Version: 5.4.0-48-generic OS Type: 64-bit Processors: 4 × AMD Ryzen 3 3200G with Radeon Vega Graphics Memory: 31.4 GiB of RAM Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon ™ RX 460 Graphics Edit: For my graphics driver, I am just using amdgpu, but I also have drivers from the kisak-mesa PPA in use. I'm honestly not sure what that really does though. |

Most freezes are due to some Desktop Effect not working properly, disabling those selectively should allow to identity the culprit.
FWIW: a very frequent cause for freezes is insufficient disk space or lack of RAM and/or SWAP space
Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ... |
