Hello everyone!
I am running Plasma 5.18 LTS on a laptop with a dual GPU Intel and AMD Radeon and I am experiencing an annoying issue. Sometimes, after logging in via sddm, I just see the wallpaper without any taskbar. The desktop is frozen and the only thing I can do is to get back to the sddm greeter via CTRL+ALT+CANC and restart. I tried all the solutions that I found here and on the web: deleting the two plasma*rc files, deleting the .cache and even the whole .config and .local folders, but nothing did the trick, because after a few reboots the issue returns. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks! |

Which exact Plasma version, which distribution? KInfoCenter gives the necessary information
Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ... |

Plasma version is 5.18.4, Framework is 5.72.0, Qt is 5.12.6 and the kernel is 5.4.5. The distro is Adelie Linux, a small independent musl-based distro. Unfortunately they have no explanation for this issue and they don't have 5.19 and 5.73 in their repos yet. They just suggested to use Xrender composer instead of OpenGL, but this hasn't fixed the problem.

Did you try with a new user?

I did even more, reinstalling the system..now the system also freezes when surfing the web with Firefox and opening a new tab. It seems unlikely that i have memory leaks, because i have 4 Gb RAM. I can't narrow down the problem, my rc.log is clean too.

Well, 4 GM RAM is not exactly much, how big is your SWAP space? It has to be at least double the size of of RAM. You need also the make sure you have enough space on your hard disk, space issues can slow down and freeze a system considerably.

I have a 8 Gb swap file, exactly twice my RAM. Also, the whole Plasma installation takes up 34% of its partition.

The only suggestion I have is to disable the Desktop Effects selectively to find the culprit

Thanks a lot, I will try. However, I am more and more convinced that it should be a distro-specific issue, since I have tried many other KDE-based distros and it's the first time that I am experiencing all these problems.

I guess as much, but that is up to the maintainers of the distribution to fix, not really anything this forum can help with.
