Plasma 5.20: The default network speed widget never shows any network activity. I'm using the default sensors "Download Rate" and "Upload Rate". The network entry in the system tray works OK. Should I submit a bug?

it's exactly the same for me.

This has already been reported, Bug #425992, and comment 12 on the bug tracker says the root cause is known and "should be corrected on next update"

Are you sure you use Kubuntu with Plasma 5.20? Did you compile it yourself? If this is another distribution, you might want to change your profile distribution setting...
Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ... |

I had the same issue for both of my regular users for about 2 weeks and after reading this post decided to see if root had the same problem.
Logged in as root, added the widget and it works just fine. I then logged back into my regular users and the widget is working for now. Operating System: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20201026 KDE Plasma Version: 5.20.1 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.75.0 Qt Version: 5.15.1 Kernel Version: 5.9.1-1-default OS Type: 64-bit Processors: 8 × Intel® Core™ i7-4810MQ CPU @ 2.80GHz Memory: 31.0 GiB of RAM Graphics Processor: Mesa DRI Intel® HD Graphics 4600

I just noticed that clicking on the network icon in the systray, then clicking on the connection to show the speed detail makes the desktop widget work.

That's strange. Makes no difference for me, system tray shows speed graph OK but widget still shows nothing.

I just tried it and yes! I can conform it works temporary while the panel is open |

So know in order to keep the widget working, I have to pin the network icon from the sys tray.

Just noticed this bug myself in Fedora 33 (not sure when the widget stopped reporting the network speed). I tried the suggestion above (click on the network icon in the system tray, then click on the active network to see the speed). That doesn't work for me either on Dec. 7.
Is the bug still outstanding? |

After a year, the bug has not been fixed, the widget does not work and also eats up all available memory (24GB) in a second

And you are using which exact Plasma version on which distribution? Without this information your comment is pretty pointless... FWIW: not reproducible on Plasma 5.23.3. Kubuntu 21.10
