[SOLVED] Black screen on boot

Sat Dec 19, 2020 9:41 am
I received errors from KDE about running out of space and had to use the command line to reboot.
After rebooting I had a black screen and cursor instead of login.
I pressed Ctrl+Alt+F4 and used startx which gives me this error:
Code: Select all
xauth: unable to write authority file /tmp/serverauth.MTD1vPisr0-n
xauth: unable to write authority file /home/anon/.Xauthority-n
xauth: unable to write authority file /home/anon/.Xauthority-n

(EE)
Fatal server error:
(EE) Could not write pid to lock file in /tmp/.tX1-lock
(EE)
(EE)
Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support at http://wiki.x.org for help.
(EE)
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: server error

Any help would be appreciated.

Edit:
df -h shows me:
Code: Select all
Filesystem                Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/nvme0n1p2              453G  452G  0  100% /
...

Edit2:
Followed the answers to this question: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/ ... s-100-full
I go to root dir: cd /
list dirs and files: ls
And do: du -h --max-depth=1 -x [dir] for each of them.
For me: du -h --max-depth=1 -x var
showed folder var/log held 423G.

Edit3:
Followed the answers to this question: https://askubuntu.com/questions/515146/ ... hould-i-do
Went to full directory: cd var/log
Checked out the file sizes: du -sh *
Deleted excessively large files with: > [filename]

[TL;DR]
Log files had bloated to giant size preventing KDE from running. Had to find and delete files.
