Showcase on the website ?

Sat Sep 12, 2015 2:37 pm
Hi,

I was looking for images for friends, to let them choose between several DE.

At first, I wanted to give them the official websites. I found this:
* https://unity.ubuntu.com/ which is pretty nice, even if I hate the experience of unity
* https://www.gnome.org/ which is also pretty nice.

At the end i found also this :
* https://www.kde.org/

I must admit, that however (or because!!) I contribute on KDE, and love the experience of Plasma 5, I couldn't give them this link, which doesn't look well at all..

I think there are 2 major problems about the KDE showcase :
1) There is this huge confusion in names : what is KDE, what is KF5, what is Plasma5, how should I call the DE (Plasma Desktop, plasmashell, plasma 5 or KDE, KDE 5?)
2) There is no showcase website where you show how nice our DE is.

* I think a website plasma.kde.org (remplace plasma by whatever it is really called, but stay short) should be build with a eye-catching design. (and the kde.org should also be eye-catching and redirect VERY easily to plasma.kde.org)
* I think the name should be set everywhere, so that phoronix, the packagers and distro don't say "use KDE" like they don't say "use GTK" but "use Plasma (which by the way is based on KF5, the frameworks of KDE)".
* The discussion happened on the kde-devel ML : I think the announcement should not countain the release of KF5, plasma and apps but only the 2 latter. The release of KF5 should only be on an internal newsletter.

Ok, I said things but giving a hand would be better. Agreed, but first, the movement should come from the KDE e.V. or the leading parts, because all this is ONLY political (the product is nice, sell it right).

Be critic about what I wrote, I've an opinion, which doesn't mean I'm right.

There is a project for refreshing our websites, you can follow it here:

I think there are 2 major problems about the KDE showcase :

The central site is about KDE, the community, and the products from the community. Plasma is one of the products. Which name would you see everywhere?

* The discussion happened on the kde-devel ML : I think the announcement should not countain the release of KF5, plasma and apps but only the 2 latter. The release of KF5 should only be on an internal newsletter.

One of the goal of Frameworks was to give developers a set of useful libraries. So Frameworks is one of our products, one of our pillars and deserve attention on the main websites exactly like the other projects.

After discussing with Tosky, it seems that the problem is not about the tools but about how easy they were to find.

If you type KDE in google (expecting to find informations about Plasma of course) you don't easily find dot.kde.org. Ok it's on the right panel on kde.org, but I never stayed more than 5s on this website because it's not eye-candy enough... And I thing this shows the strength of KDE as a community.

But anyway, we miss something to say "Plasma is the DE you need". The forum article given above show that it's on the rails, then cheers, I follow it, and hope to be able to help.

As a user, I don't care about what is KDE at first. I want a product, the nicest DE, so why not Plasma. Then, maybe, because I'm not just a consumer, or I want to contribute, I'll realize that KDE is a awesome family and be proud of being part of it. But it's not the first reason why people come here, because you need to be part of it to realize it.

Of course when we are part of the KDE community, it's becomes one of the most important thing, but we can't rely on this to seduce people.

Of course you must talk about it, because it's a nice and huge piece of work you must be proud of.
