Android have Google Account, Windows Phone have Microsoft account etc. I think should be great if KDE could provide OwnCloud accounts for all Plasma users, but I know KDE should need a lot of resources to provide them. BTW Plasma Mobile could provide OwnCloud integration for that users that have their own servers (or BTW use a OwnCloud service provider).

Which services we can provide for Plasma users through OwnCloud?
Actually OwnCloud can sync:
    1) files
    2) bookmarks
    3) notes
    4) feeds/news
    5) calendar

And you can also stream music!

We could share Plasma settings so when the user buy a new phone (for example), he can login and find all his saved settings.

I'm slowly working on a Plasma-integrated owncloud client. It's focused on filesync for now, but more types of data can be added later on.

In System Settings/Personalisation/Online Accounts it suggests: "Configure your internet accounts such as Google, Live, Owncloud"

i'm using 5.4 from the ubuntu Ci ppa
is the tooltip wrong or did i miss something ?

sebas,

Are you using the existing owncloud linux client or starting clean?

My plan is to split the existing owncloud client into a library and front-end (this has already been discussed with the owncloud devs), and then build a mobile-compatible, Plasma-based UI on top of that. (Most of the latter exists already.)

I'm currently caught up a bit with Wayland work, but plan to resume the owncloud hacking once that's out of the way.

Could you point me to anything I could read to get up to speed on the discussions?

No, the discussions happened in private context. Are you interested in helping out, out just curious?

Cool. :)

If you drop me an email to sebas@kde.org, I'll forward you preliminary plans for the splitting of the owncloud client.

Done. You should see an email from Alcor Mizar (vasris@outlook.com).

@alex-l
It's been a year since you posted, but in case you are still interested, there was a distro which name I don't remember -could it be Netrunner? I'm not sure- that, effectively, would gave a 2 GB OC account for free from its installation.
Don't know if it still works, but yes, it was a great idea as most users don't know how/can't/dont need to have a private server at their home, running permanently 24/7/365(6), and demanding updates, security tweaks, and other actions that are far beyond what an average user, even an "average power user" needs to know and spend time on.
So, it's a very nice idea and I'm all with you: KDE desktop environments should get some agreements to open sourced cloud storage providers -not necessarily based on Owncloud, there are other platforms based on free or open sourced software- to offer free -gratis- basic accounts. There are several poviders that offer free accounts with 1 or 2 GB with the hope that a small percentage of those users will eventually buy bigger spaces -Openmailbox or Blaucloud come to my mind, but I've seen several more-, perhaps some of them would be interested in appearing in a hypotetical wizard that desktops showed to their users, for instance when opening the «Online accounts» KCM module.

BTW, I think you should post your idea to the Brainstorm forum, https://forum.kde.org/viewforum.php?f=83, or even file a wish to https://bugs.kde.org, my experience tells me that almost no developer eads this forum. :-\

Thanks for the reply, I use Openmailbox as my primary email account and I like they offer ownCloud, though with very few apps. I know there is work in progress to integrate Plasma and Nextcloud. What I'm wondering is if KDE could provide a 1-2 GB of Nextcloud to all the users with a KIdentity and provide those Nextcloud apps that improve Plasma experience. With obviously a wizard to setup everything automatically, from Files to Contacts. This means for sure a lot of work for sys admins, but Openmailbox for example works thanks to donations, so maybe the model could be applied also in KDE.
