sorry if this question is too naive or general ... I read a lot of the wiki and forums etc and I still cannot quite figure out if I can use your project , as I would hope, to ditch my android phone I have on Sprint and instead have cell phone service on an unlocked nexus 5 running Plasma ? will I then have to sign up for a voip account with some provider and then have to find a wireless internet connection I can use in order to make a call somewhere? also, can I install packages on the device via like apt such as a web browser? I would be very grateful for any pointers to where I can find this info in your document.ation

I have probably read just about the same things about Plasma Mobile as you have, but as I understand it Plasma Mobile on Nexus 5 is currently just a prototype. While it seems to be functional, it seems to be more of a proof-of-concept. That being said, the call functionality should be working. You can see here (http://plasma-mobile.org/technology/) that it is using Voicecall as a dialer (to dial the phone numbers) and oFono to actually make the calls (which seems to support GMS/UMTS). So it should be possible to have cell phone service with Plasma Mobile right now.
However, as it's just a prototype, it's not ready yet as a full-featured phone. It has some basic apps available, which you can see here (http://plasma-mobile.org/apps/). I think that Plasma Mobile is mainly used for testing and development right now. So while it's technically possible to use Plasma Mobile to make calls, I don't think it can be used to replace your current phone yet. From the apps page it seems possible to install packages through apt, but there's no guarantee on whether they will work correctly. So it seems like Plasma Mobile is currently not intended for end-users, so you probably shouldn't install it as OS for your phone. As for where to find information, I think most of it would be available through http://plasma-mobile.org/ and this forum (which is also linked to on the site). |
