So when you drag an image into krita if you drag click to the canvas it gives you options, if you drag out of the canvas it automatically opens as new documents, this is including if you drag to the layers. A good functionality improvement could be to if you drag an image for importing to the layers menu they open as new layers instead of opening them all as new documents.
