contributing to kde

Sat Aug 04, 2012 12:01 pm
i'm working on kubuntu 12.04 for the last 3 months and i really love it.
Presently i'm pursuing a undergrad studies in computer science and want to contribute to the project but unwilling to learn Qt.
i know C and C++ quite well and really want to do something for KDE.

Can anyone tell me about some project where i can contribute?

Welcome to the KDE community.
It is possible to contribute in more than one way to KDE (Promo, Documentation writing - on Userbase for instance, etc).

If you are interested in development, I would recommend focusing on "scratching your itch" - ie. find issues which particularly affect you and correct them. I would recommend looking at Techbase in this case.

The code for KMix is currently part of the KDE Multimedia module, which is hosted on git.kde.org.
You can browse the code at https://projects.kde.org/projects/kde/m ... repository and view instructions for downloading a copy of the code there as well.

I would recommend following a build environment setup guide on Techbase before you try to compile KDE code however, as it is usually necessary to set several environment variables to ensure it works smoothly.

Why don't you want to learn Qt? If you know C++ well, Qt is just an extension to what you already know.

I agree with bcooksley that the best way to get started is to fix something that affects you personally. Most projects would welcome new contributors with open arms. If you want a suggestion, maybe Dolphin would interest you? http://freininghaus.wordpress.com/2012/ ... velopment/

@hans:
i respect your call to learn Qt. But as i've said that i'm in a undergrad course and actually a 3rd year. I have some pressure for the 4th year when companies will come for recruitment. I've to learn many things for that also. So i don't want to have extra pressure for learning Qt.
Will definitely learn that in due course, but not now.
