I got the source of plasma-workspace downloaded via git from github.
Then I started Kdevelop and tried to build it. Following errors occured:

CMake Error: The following variables are used in this project, but they are set to NOTFOUND.
Please set them or make sure they are set and tested correctly in the CMake files:
X11_Xrender_LIB (ADVANCED)
    linked by target "kdeinit_ksmserver" in directory /home/paul/Dokumente/Programmierung/plasma-workspace/ksmserver

You need development headers for any dependency CMake errors out.

In this case the error is about X11 XRender, so ask your package manager or in a forum of your distribution which development package you need to install.

This helped a lot!

I just installed libxrender-dev (I'm using KDE Neon) and now it works.
