CAS inquery of the sages of KDE ...

Tue Dec 23, 2008 7:41 pm
To learn KDE+Qt, I'm writing a frontend for CAS's like Maxima and Yacas; I've noticed this has been attempted several times before, but am determined to get something (awesome!) off the ground. Currently, I'm only focusing on Maxima because it seems to have the easiest syntax and can already export solutions in either Tex or MathML -- which brings me to my question: which of the two would be the better choice for displaying nicely formatted solutions? Beginning with KDE 4.2 (and already in Trunk), I will have access to KFormula's library, which will allow me to use its awesome FormulaCursor and FormulaRenderer widgets, which work with MathML xml files. My plan is to embed Maxima in the background of the application (currently dubbed 'Kdecas') and supply it with the input obtained from the TextEdit widget, export the solution to MathML which will then be handed to FormulaRenderer to work its magic, and then repainted on the canvas beneath the user's expression. Does that sound like a plan?

Being new to programming in general, my education has focused mainly on Java, but I have advanced learning skills and have taught myself the basics of C++; would anybody be willing to be a sort of mentor to me (i.e. answer questions when I'm having difficulty with something)? I have a lot of good ideas, I just need help getting my feet off the ground.

Hi,

Sounds like a good project.

If you need any guidance, send a mail to kde-devel@kde.org or kde-edu-devel@kde.org.

Also, you will get help on IRC channel #kde-devel.

All the best,

Steve.
