Pardon my ignorant question but what distribution do you use for your kde dev?
I never contributed to KDE but want to, I know a fair bit of Qt and C++. I tried setting up the dev environment as described on techbase but somehow it always errors out at some point or later, compiling the whole thing that is ![]() So I tried project neon but Kubuntu doesn't love me either, it breaks for me so I cant install anything ![]() For the start I only want to make a plasma widget, what's the best distribution for development? Suse I suppose?

I use openSUSE, but I use a self compiled installation from KDE Trunk for general use. The only thing it tends to lack in is having all the dependencies which a Debian based distribution may not have.

I have found that after a good spell covinced that Kubuntu was my favourite Linux Distro, especially with KDE 3.5, I am now utterly convinced that opensuse 11.1 with KDE 3.5 is better still!
I still love Kubuntu, dont get me wrong, but have found opensuse to be better in so many wats! Does anyone agree with that, and does anyone else prefer KDE 3.5 over KDE 4.x?

I. Hate. Yast.
I think openSuSE is a bit too customized by people who don't seem to know how to code very well. If it ain't broke, don't fix it ya buggers! The only thing I feel the same about in Kubuntu is jockey-kde. Can someone please please please re-write that, when I tend to use it I always end up either: 1) Having to install the drivers manually 2) Being utterly confused why it worked perfectly yet appeared to fail miserably An example of 1): I tried to use it once, it crashed (predictably), when I tried to start it again in the future it just hung on the loading screen An example of 2): I tried to use it once with a dodgy internet connection. The progress bar stopped at 0% so I decided to try it again after a few minutes. I pressed cancel, the app crashed (of course), it wouldn't let me start it again. I rebooted, and lo and behold, there were the NVIDIA drivers, installed and set up perfectly. |

How about Arch Linux?
Imo Arch Linux packaging style is pretty simple, compairing against RPM or DEB. Also Arch Linux is rolling release distro,so we can get latest packages.

I would suggest Arch Linux. Try using minimalistic distros which use plain vanilla settings and do not add much customizations of their own. And I've never seen a distro with the KDE environment as smooth as in Arch. I don't know why. But that's how it is.

It shouldn't matter much, as long as you can install the dependencies easily. To build trunk, I recommend a tool called kdesvn-build - it makes the whole process much easier, in my opinion. I wrote a guide about using kdesvn-build here.
