Controlling system volume

Is there an API in KDE to control the system-level volume? Does KMix offer/use one?

I'm looking to control toggling of various output channel's volumes via a Plasma Applet, but am unsure on where to start.

Any pointers would be appreciated :)

KMix uses the low level system APIs directly ( ALSA/OSS/Pulseaudio ) I believe. KDE doesn't have any high level API as such itself.
