KDE Neon vs Kubuntu

Sun Jan 31, 2016 9:44 pm
Hi,

Just to better understand, what would be the difference between KDE Neon and Kubuntu? Thanks!

KDE neon's foundations will be the Ubuntu LTS version, they will not change unless necessary or a new version comes along. The KDE software on top of the foundations however keeps getting updated by default whenever new stable releases are done. The primary focus of development is getting the latest stable KDE software to the users of KDE neon.

Kubuntu on the other hand moves along with the Ubuntu releases in between LTS releases and each Kubuntu release has set versions of KDE software it releases with. Once released no new feature versions are added. The primary focus of development is preparing the upcoming (every 6 months) Kubuntu version.

Annoyed with bbcode since 1999.

Thanks for clarifying. Looks very similar to using Kubuntu LTS + kubuntu-backports ppa though. Anyway, many thanks for your work guys!

I'd love to see more clear explanation. "KDE neon's foundations will be the Ubuntu LTS version, they will not change" - does it explain Ubuntu LTS or Neon?

I am assuming Neon is a rolling release distro-like (when it comes to the desktop/desktop apps) and really replaces Kubuntu (as the team has largely moved there). Guys, how about letting the normal users know in simple words what's-what?

I am extra grateful for having opportunity to see e.g. Calligra packages for Ubuntu on the release day, instead of with large delay or never (depending on LTS).

One more question: is there synchronization with the lifecycle of LTSes? Can application authors count on Neon to have packages for entire lifetime of LTS 16.04 for example, i.e. up to 2021? This is what would match the support for apps on Windows or some paid Linuxes.

On KDE Neon project we can read:
"KDE neon is a rapidly updated software repository"
"KDE neon will provide users with more up-to-date packages of Qt in addition to cutting-edge KDE offerings. "

Does KDE Neon project concerns only new KDE software or both new KDE software and new Plasma versions?

Is this similar to running the Kubuntu Continuous Integration PPA?

As I See Neon would have more or less the Same model of Chakra, a stable core with The latest applications from KDE. But with the stability of Ubuntu and the posibility to find Lot of Software.
I think that is the Best way to have a modern and stable System.
I think I will change my favorite Distro (Chakra) and will be in love with KDE Neon.
I have great expectations.

I'd like a clarification on how Neon finds and updates its packages. Does it rely on classic Ubuntu repositories to find software, and on specific Neon repositories defined with something like a higher priority in order for KDE-related stuffs to be taken from Neon repo first ?
Does it rely on Ubuntu repo directly to download non-FKE software ? If yes, it's relaxing as we know we will always have all the stable Ubuntu softwares.

Can somebody explain please ?

I agree. If some one could elaborate with more experience.

As far as I can tell besides getting applications like KDevelop faster you also get Qt version updates which are normally controlled by upstream ubuntu project and not the kubuntu project. That is pretty awesome as development of Qt has been moving rather quickly recently.

It would be nice to know which PPAs to avoid by knowing how the additions effect everything else.

Thanks

Kde neon = same Ubuntu LTS base. kernel xorg... Kde Plasma will be updated every time kde brings out new releases. The Ubuntu base will update bug fixes as ubuntu brings them out.....

To clarify from the Kubuntu perspective -- there is no "versus" in our relationship with Neon. Many of us are part of both teams, and all of us cooperate to get the best software to our users as soon as possible. We work "upstream" with Ubuntu, with Debian, with KDE.

Which you choose should be based on your needs, not personal ties. If you need the very latest KDE software, you will find it with Neon. If you want Kubuntu, our team works tirelessly to bring you friendly computing.

nice wferreria! :)

I'd add that updates are FAST AND FURIOUS!! sometimes a hundred or more every day.

I have seen significant changes in certain pieces of software in terms of "overall appearance", also "capabiilites ( like in terms of something new going on with a music app) "most" of it is in the "guts" of the system, like the "libs", one can read this in the details of the update.

A marked visual update occurred a few days ago with a plain black bootloader screen and iconography which matches the rest of the icons in the OS.

Since I use the music apps a lot and have been "testing them" since back the day of Xandros and doing the whole mpd thing with various user interfaces and coordinating with Conky, back before #! changed to "ubuntu" i"m greatly enjoying watching just how FAST this stuff is being changed and improved, ..... I guess like when one is working with anyone....giving immediate feedback is a good thing and for the devs to be able to roll stuff out and get immediate feedback is a good thing! :)
