neon wayland with nvidia drivers?

Sun Jun 12, 2016 8:18 pm
going to try out kde neon unstable dev with wayland but when I booted noticed that nouveau drivers are used.
Is it already possible to use the the proprietary nvidia drivers with neon wayland?
I did not have good experience with nouveau on Kubuntu 16.04.

You use the following command to get the list of packages for each driver, and then install the packages using apt-get.

Code: Select all
sudo ubuntu-drivers devices

Should get output something like this:

Code: Select all
== /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.0 ==

vendor   : NVIDIA Corporation
modalias : pci:v000010DEd00000DDAsv000017AAsd000021D1bc03sc00i00
model    : GF106GLM [Quadro 2000M]
driver   : xserver-xorg-video-nouveau - distro free builtin
driver   : nvidia-304-updates - distro non-free
driver   : nvidia-304 - distro non-free
driver   : nvidia-331 - distro non-free recommended
driver   : nvidia-331-updates - distro non-free

Then install the driver for your card. Most likely the recommended one:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install nvidia-331

Once done, run the command:

Code: Select all
sudo nvidia-xconfig

Reboot and you should be all set.

Oh forgot to mention, Wayland support on Nvidia is still lacking to some degree and Wayland will be buggy for sure.

Trying latest neon dev wayland on nvidia drivers failed: I could not log in.

For switching from nvidia to nouveau I had to purge nvidia:
sudo apt-get purge nvidia*

and to switch back from nvidia to nouveau I had to re-install nvidia:
sudo ubuntu-drivers auto-install

If anyone knows a cleaner way to switch between them without purging/re-installing, let me know.

Neon dev wayland on nouveau was a short experience, too many crashes.
Luckily krunner worked to restart plasmashell.

I read somewhere that latest beta nvidia drivers have a bit more wayland functionality. Is there an easy way to install those and an an easy way to uninstall them to revert to default nvidia drivers?

Update: here is how to install latest (beta) nvidia drivers:

sudo apt-get install software-properties-common

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo apt-get update

apt-cache search nvidia | grep nvidia-36

sudo apt-get install nvidia-367

Trying plasma wayland with those latest nvidia drivers also fails: I can not log in.

here in its comments and in following link I read that nvidia wayland is not compatible with wayland compositor of KDE! >:(

So for now wayland only works with nouveau?
