KDE Neon? no worries

Fri Aug 26, 2016 2:12 am
Hi
I've been running the "developer" edition of KDE Neon since 05 July 2016 (5.7).

There was "discussion" about whether it would "run properly" on "older machines".

I'm kinda strange in that I don't actually have hard drives "in" my computers except for lappys. lol

I leave the side of the case open and stand the hard drive vertically on a .22 caliber shell holder with a multicolour case fan blowing directly on the underside of the hd, it massively extends the life of a drive! lol

Anyhow, I presently run two machines:
work:
AMD FX 6100 six core

multimedia centre:
1 x AMD sempron 3000+ with 1 gig memory and Nvidia GeForce (NV43) 6600 video card.

With the first AMD FX 6100 machine I plug and unplug the OS in alternation with Kubuntu Trusty and it is my "production" machine wherewith I do a lot of heavy duty video and image processing and a lot of "office work" for the college whereat I am an instructor.

I have had absolutely NO problems with KDE Neon on that machine. It interacts with Bluetooth 4.0, a "jam" bluetooth speaker, wireless speakers, wired speakers, an ancient HP 6P printer running through a combo usb and parallel plug, wifi, a wireless "airmouse" and keyboard, a wireless and usb HP6600 printer scanner combo, an HP widescreen monitor, etc. never a hiccup. it is not run continuously but enough to be able to tell.

But, I decided to use the AMD Sempron machine as my very first dedicated multimedia machine pushing a Zenith 50 inch (diagonal) widescreen television which has (the last) RGB inputs and HDMI input. it also pushes a Samsung "sound-bar" and associated wireless and active subwoofer.

I do streaming music, cds, DVDs, you name it, and the only thing is..... that.... I have to make a lot of tea and / or coffee because I turn the machine off when going to bed and have to...... when I reboot............wait for the FAST AND FURIOUS updates! I mean sometimes hundreds at a time and DAILY!!

I dunno about other people's experiences but I have two pretty DIS-similar machines and have had.....zero as in zero ..problems, nada, none, end of story.

So, this should put paid any worries about KDE Neon running on "older" machines, except maybe an Timex Sinclair! :)

great job devs! :)
