New user: Is Discovery broken?

Wed Sep 07, 2016 9:21 am
Hi all,

Neon is the first "distro" (I did notice they don't call it one) that I've tried in a few years. Unfortunately, the Discovery Software Center doesn't seem to work. Upon opening it, I get a list of the same 5 comics in both the Most Popular and Best Rating columns, and when I try to navigate to any section besides the addons, I get nothing but empty staring back at me. I did a search and saw a few complaints about Discovery, but nothing to the extent of what I've experienced so far. Is this a common thing, or just me? Or perhaps there are steps that I haven't yet taken to make it work? Any help would be very much appreciated.

Don't know if it has anything to do with your problem, but the first thing I did was to install Synaptic.

I then installed the software packages I wanted. Discovery now shows packages I installed that it recognizes, but not things such as Libre Office which I installed through a PPA. It also does show available packages under the categories, but don't know if it did before installing Synaptic.

I wouldn't use Discovery to install anything, and rely on Synaptic.

Thank you, sir. It's funny, after running the update command (which I suppose I should have done right off the bat) in order to get Synaptic, Discovery started displaying properly. But I'll take your advice and stick with Synaptic. Seems a lot of people agree with you.

Glad you got it sorted.

There are applications in Discovery that apply to desktops other than KDE, and installing them may not work. I always use Synaptic to both install packages and to check for updates. It is safer and you know it will work.

If I need something that is not in Synaptic, then I make a system image before using a PPA or DEB file. That way I can always do a restore if it breaks anything.
