My wifi is pretty inconsistent and unreliable so far, and it seems to be the norm with my card/driver, which is RealTek RTL8821AE. I ran across a thread in the Ubuntu forums in which a mod posted some commands to run, and they seem to fix most issues with any RealTek card.

https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2245164 -The thread in question, if it helps.

Code: Select all
wget -N -t 5 -T 10 https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/backports/stable/v3.18.1/backports-3.18.1-1.tar.xz
tar -xf backports-3.18.1-1.tar.xz
cd ~/backports-3.18.1-1
make defconfig-rtlwifi
make
sudo make install

He then says after updating the kernel, to run these commands...

Code: Select all
cd ~/backports-3.18.1-1
make clean
make defconfig-rtlwifi
make
sudo make install

So, I have a few questions:

1) Is that first command updating the kernel? If not, how do I accomplish this?

2) Regardless of what the 3.18.1-1 is referring to, I'm assuming this isn't current? The thread I mentioned is from February of 2015.

3) What are the updated commands I would need to run?

My apologies for the novice questions... I'm still learning.

Dude, KDE Neon use kernel 4.4.0-36-generic. I believe that your system use the same, if it is updated.

Yes, this 3.18 is old, the actually is newest.

I advise you don't make downgrade version of your Kernel. Look this article: http://askubuntu.com/questions/797213/wireless-disconnect-issues-ubuntu-16-04-with-rtl8821ae/816514 I believe that will help you

Thank you!

I didn't want to downgrade my kernel, or anything else, which is why I posted this thread. Anyway, I followed the instructions in the thread you provided, and so far, the wifi does seem to have improved reliability wise. Thanks for your help!
