New to KDE Neon have some issues

Mon Oct 17, 2016 10:41 pm
Trying to figure out coming from a arch way with Aur and Octopi. Made for a complete availability of programs I needed. But thought to give Neon a go.
So installed most recent 10/4 5.8 iso.

1) When trying to Get New Plasmoids for Panel. Or New Themes,Decorations,etc.. Keep getting a Network error (401) in Add Plasmoids or in System Settings Addons. So how am I to add plasmoids to my desktop or panel?

2) Searching in Discover is confusing like I searched for Conky in applications nada-nothing. How do we find applications and programs to install in Neon in Discover? Find it confusing Applications> Applications Addons> Plasma Addons clicked on last one nothing listed?

3) Should I install Synaptic Package Manager? Is the best solution?

4) Added Update plasmoid to know when I have updates. Best solution for updating machine?

Just trying to get a handle and know it's a minimal install. But can't fine many of the apps I need in Discover.
Krita don't want Caligra Author listed. Gimp is listed when searched but doesn't show version number. Isn't that important to know before installing?
As many others Stellarium,PokerTH,etc no version or date to determine freshness.

Searching for a Torrent application gives strange QVideoob,QCookboob,QFlatBoob,etc.. and nothing for actual torrent applications? Which I found not through the search bar but manually searching through Applications>Internet> and manually scrolling though find torrent apps like qBittorrent was there? I was confused why main search gave nothing. Then went into Drawing and Painting & Editing programs and still no Krita but many others there like Mypaint,Gimp,etc...

When I tried to install Calibre got a "Dependency resolution failed" error and now can't install?

Description: e-book converter and library management
Calibre is meant to be a complete e-library solution. It includes library
management, format conversion, news feeds to e-book conversion as well as
 e-book reader sync features.
 .
Calibre is primarily an e-book cataloging program. It manages your e-book
collection for you. It is designed around the concept of the logical book,
i.e. a single entry in the database that may correspond to e-books in several
formats. It also supports conversion from a dozen different e-book formats to
LRF and EPUB. A graphical interface to the conversion software can be
accessed easily by just clicking the "Convert E-books" button.
 .
Supported input formats are: MOBI, LIT, PRC, EPUB, ODT, HTML, CBR, CBZ, RTF,
 TXT, PDF and LRS.
 .
Calibre has a modular device driver design that makes adding support for
different e-reader devices easy. At the moment, it has support for the
SONY PRS 500/505/700 and the iPhone (with the stanza reader software).
Syncing supports updating metadata on the device from metadata in the library
and the creation of collections on the device based on the tags defined in
the library view. If an book has more than one format available, calibre
automatically chooses the best format when uploading to the device.
 .
Calibre can automatically fetch news from a number of websites/RSS feeds,
format the news into a e-book and upload to a connected device. There is
support for generating LRF/EPUB e-books. The e-books include the *full*
versions of the articles, not just the summaries.
 .
Calibre has also a built-in e-book viewer that can display all the major e-book
 formats.
however for Calibre look @hear https://plus.google.com/+GökhanGündüz/posts/BxuJkTuZta5 basicly the sugeshton seams to be to get it from hear http://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux

for staying updated I run this every day or so ,,,,
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get  dist-upgrade
your from arch ,,,,,then you no man pages ,,,see "man apt-get" and "man apt"

if you know and like synaptic it is fine to install it ,,,
Code: Select all
sudo apt install synaptic

sudo apt install synaptic just fine tho broken themeing not matching Breeze Dark.
Had 172 updates and clicked on tray updater.

Image

It proceeded to open Discover and then just sat there and did nothing for 10 mins which I then cancelled.
Image

This isn't boding well for Neon. Seems much is missing or broken.
Now stuck using the terminal and commands? Which I hate and feel should be unnecessary for the average user.
I downed the stable for user version. And it seems not ready for prime time?
I could fix but wanting ready to use. Don't have the hours to tinker with.

Tried to install Calibre and yep seems broken.

Nooooooo :)
Use apt to install things, forget about gui thingy's to install apps. You could try Muon not discover... it is qt based and not gtk as Synaptic

Yeah, Calibre needs to be packaged with the updated dependencies. This is the only reference to that I've found yet. Can someone tell us where is the right place to post this package request?

Hello,

I also tried to install Calibre. It did not work in synaptic and in the terminal due to problems with broken dependencies.

I looked at the homepage of Calibre (https://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux) and followed the instructions there.

Copy the following commands to the terminal and execute:
sudo -v && wget -nv -O- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/kovid ... staller.py | sudo python -c "import sys; main=lambda:sys.stderr.write('Download failed\n'); exec(sys.stdin.read()); main()"

Then you wil have Calibre installed.

Thanks for the info. But getting near to ending my bout with KDE Neon. As didn't have any of these issues in Manjaro Netrunner.
As of this morning with 110 updates to 5.8.2 still have 2 new issues that existed before and after this latest update.

1) Running dual 22" displays running default open drivers. And my conky script which works fine on any other distro now is not placing correctly on startup.

background no
border_margin 5
border_width 15
default_color white
double_buffer yes
draw_borders no
draw_outline no
draw_shades no
gap_x 2000
gap_y 0
maximum_width 800
minimum_size 300
no_buffers yes
override_utf8_locale yes
own_window yes
own_window_title conky
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_type normal ## normal /override /desktop
own_window_argb_visual yes # true transparency, a compositor has to be active
own_window_argb_value 0 # make the background semi-transparent
own_window_type normal ## normal /override /desktop
text_buffer_size 8000
total_run_times 0
update_interval 1
uppercase no
use_xft yes
xftalpha 1
xftfont Freesans:pixelsize=9

alignment top_left ------ "This should place it in the proper alignment and works fine on all other distro's been using last 2-3 years."
#alignment top_right
gap_x 1720 ------- "This should place it in the proper alignment and works fine on all other distro's been using last 2-3 years."
gap_y 0

Comes up 2nd monitor lower left instead of stated upper left of 2nd monitor.
If I open the .conkyrc file and re-save then it re-launches conky placing it in proper position of upper left. Go figure.

2) Trying to add plasmoids to my panel. Went to get new plasmoids and saw yahoo weather & gmail feed which I used before without issue. Now after installing they don't show up in plasmoids library. Even re-booted system they are not showing up as installed for me to select.

Just getting down to problem of 1 or 2 issues fixed then 3 new issues popup.
Couple that with the long wait and lack of responses in this forum makes me feel I may never find fixes or get issues resolved.
As much press Neon is getting I would think there would be larger community chiming in. But here seems more of a ghost town.
Not saying it's anyone's fault and don't have the answers. But without a larger contributing user base in forums most distro's suffer greatly.

But do appreciate the couple of individuals that chimed in about Calibre & Synaptic. But still other unresolved issues is likely going to force me away from Neon to something else. Tho do Love & Appreciate all that have made it possible through their hard works.

I'm getting the same problem with Calibre, and when pasting your command, it will not execute...KDE neon 5.8.1

"Update" Correction, I had to manually find the full address to the git page, the command was inputting an abbreviation. After manually putting the full git address and executing the command, calibre is now installed. Thank you for your help!
