Is KDE Neon a work install distro?

Fri Dec 23, 2016 2:38 pm
I have been using KDE Neon as my work install for several months now (currently 5.8, Plasma 5.29.0, Qt 5.7.0, Kernel 4.4.0-57-generic, 64 bit) and have been pleased with it. But updates from last week really messed up 2 things I use a lot -- okular and access to 2 USB drives on my router. I noticed this statement on the neon forum listing: "KDE Neon provides an easy and elegant way for people to test the latest from KDE, or use the latest releases of KDE Software." So, my question, "Is KDE Neon a work install distro or simply a testing distro?"

Nonsense, KDE Neon is solid as a rock. I have been using it for about 4 months now, and have completely switched all my computers (12 units) to KDE at home, and work. It is based on LTS version of Ubuntu which is as stable as it gets! I also have tried just about all other KDE distributions in the past 10 years, and none of them has impressed me more than KDE Neon...., and no more worrying about breaking my operating system after an update! Although, Some of my computers had issues with the latest update, and kernel 4.4.0.57, which the computer wouldn't boot (maybe because of hard drive encryption), but I was able to login via the advanced settings, and the kernel 4.4.0.53, and then uninstall the kernel 4.4.0.57 through Synaptic, and that's that. ;)

I think it all depends on what program you use and so on. I mainly use kde apps, so for me it is perfect, there is some problem with qt apps from ubuntu repo that is build against older qt. I think that kde neon has a small team and i don't think they test to much, when there is updates maybe you should wait a couple of days before updating or you could always head over to IRC and ask the developers for help.

It is rock solid for me as well, but my install is small because i don't use to much programs.

Thanks for the replies. I am feeling better about staying with it. I have used Linux since 2004 starting with Mepis for several years then Mint KDE and Kubuntu. Over the years I have become less competent as Linux has become more "out of the box". :o
