recently ran apt-get update/upgrade for the first time in a week or so, and it had a ton of updates (one of which was the new spashscreen) all of the sudden, I'm getting an issue just like this one https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=133782 (sorry i necroed it, didn't have a working computer last night.) however, i made sure i do not have fingerprint-gui installed. also, starting it with startx from the alt-ctrl=f1 console results in a black screen with a cursor and the active corner effects, but nothing else. i have tried the usual things, (renaming .kde, .local, .cache, and .conf) but neither issue seems to resolve. any ideas?
EDIT: after reading some more, the massive number of package updates were the plasma 5.9 update.

first you need to tell it all with as much detail as you can ,,,,,,,,,,,in the post you link to you tell that you removed " libfakekey0" but not hear ,,,,,,
was anything else removed ? did the "upgrade" go through with no problems or warnings ? I would start with ,,,,,,,going back to a TTY and loging in then install the " libfakekey0" then do a
dist-upgrade is in my opinion the better option when running upgrades as it allows for version upgrades of packages (removal of old and installation of new) instead of just updates for the current version of the package as upgrade dose . VINNY |

in this post: http://askubuntu.com/questions/795890/kubuntu-14-04-kde-login-impossible-after-update/796146 one of the users solved it by removing fingerprint-gui, libfakekey0, and libfprint0. libfakekey0 was the only one installed in my system. the upgrades had no error messages that stopped the process, but there was some messages about missing firmware. if you can tell me where the logs for apt-get are located, i can put them here.
as for doing dist-upgrade, i ran uprade with --with-new-pkgs, which i believe is the same behavior. sorry if its not much help, but I've only been using linux for a 3 months, and, while I'm comfortable enough using the command line, i have no clue where log files are located, nor how to get them off the machine. (dont have access to a live usb, but i do have a .5 GB usb that i could transfer logs onto via CLI, if i knew how. it should just be mounting it as a disk, right?) EDIT: i also ran apt-get autoremove, if that helps. |

nvidia 1070, latest proprietary drives. (gaming machine) apt install -f found nothing. however, whenever I run apt update, I do get messages that target packages are configured multiple times in etc/apt/sources.list:52 and etc/apt/sources.list:(46,48 or 50) this is not new, and I didn't think it was a problem, but any bit of info helps, right? |

You have a duplicate lines in sources.list but this did not cause a black screen.
I'm not a gamer so I can not help you with Nvidia,I have an AMD GPU. I read that there are problems when you have two graphics card one that is part of the CPU and the other is a real graphic card. may help you: http://askubuntu.com/questions/791439/t ... t-gtx-1070 |

Why are you doing this? These folders are hidden for a reason. Here are all the settings for a single user. If you have not returned to its original state is the only alternative that can create your new usera or do reinstall Neon. |

you do this so it regenerates the default configs. i renamed instead of deleted so that i would have a backup for the originals. as for the integrated graphics, im pretty sure they are disabled in my BIOS. according to apt-get, linux-firmware is already at the latest version. i cant remember the exact firmware it was missing, it was i(3digit number). if apt keeps logs of those sorts of things, could you point me to them? |

Try booting with the "nomodeset" option, in case there is a clash with nuveau and nvidia drivers? Then search for nvidia package and install latest available one?

Log files are located in /var/log. I search and looking bugs.
You do not have a GUI that you have to start in recovery mod, I am installing MC and through him watch, edit, copy. I think it was a mistake and that the GPU driver might have helped reinstall the driver. First, delete the driver, restart, recovery mod, install driver. I'm just guessing so that someone more experienced can help you |

not sure i understand you here. i dont need a gui to use nomodeset what is MC? how would i go about deleting and reinstalling the gpu driver? |

i do have a 3 TB backup HDD. at this point, would it be better to boot from a live usb (when i can get my hands on one), backup all my important stuff, and reinstall the OS?

yes, however, running startx from the tty results in a black screen with only the cursor and the screen edge highlight effects. started with the recent update (plasma 5.9?) |
