I have used unstable versions of software before. I used the Minetest daily branch and the Minecraft snapshots. Usually they are considered not production-ready, but I never had issues with any but a few of them.
I like KDE neon because of its release structure. I want a stable system, but I also want the latest apps. I want everything I see to be updated. Neon is a start. I just installed the developer-unstable edition of KDE neon because it has some very nice features that, if another desktop was able to implement them well, I would use. It fixes one of the more annoying bugs in Discover(apps being listed twice). I plan to use the Developer Edition until bugs get really annoying, in which case I still have a neon User partition that I can use while I wait for a fix. Only had a few minor issues: 1. Why is it version 5.9.90 rather than 5.10-pre or git? 2. It's slower than neon user, but not so slow that I can't use it. 3. Calamares is missing some features. 4. I thought Plasma for Wayland would be there by default, but apparently not. But other than that, I really love KDE 5.10 and the corresponding neon release. Most of all I like the spring-loading feature in Folder View. Yay, a KDE release with a killer feature in it! Also, lots of annoying bugs are actually fixed in neon Developer. I will be reporting bugs to KDE developers whenever I find them. Until then, cheers.
Hi, I'm Ivan, a competent computer user (which means geek to most). I run KDE neon Developer when it works and KDE neon User when Developer doesn't work.
Hope I helped you with any problems you may have had ![]() |

Hey Ivan,
Crossed my mind to install Developer Stable. Wonder whether it's suitable for a daily driver. I wouldn't install Developer Unstable though. Ultimately, terms like alpha, beta, RC and so forth are relative. I recall I had Dev Stable installed some months ago and it seemed stable and fresh to me. I'm also quitting these discussions about stability cause I might end up with my head unstable. ![]()
Proud to be powered by Plasma

You can change the repo it queries for updates in your apt config. My /etc/apt/sources.list.d/neon.list looks like this:
If you want the dev stable build instead replace "unstable" with "stable" in the code above. |
