Newer kernel?

Mon Mar 27, 2017 9:02 pm
How to upgrade kernel to 4.8 in Neon User edition? I'm not sure, but Ubuntu LTS should currently have 4.8 as stated here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Support? ... hedule.svg
If possible, is it worth to update?

It's possible.

KDE neon User Edition:

$ uname -a
Linux neon 4.8.0-42-generic #45~16.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 9 14:10:58 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

HOWTO:

Install those:

Code: Select all
$ apt list -a '*linux*hwe*' 2>/dev/null | command grep installed
linux-generic-hwe-16.04/xenial-updates,now 4.8.0.44.16 amd64 [installed]
linux-headers-generic-hwe-16.04/xenial-updates,now 4.8.0.44.16 amd64 [installed,automatic]
linux-hwe-tools-4.8.0-36/xenial-updates,xenial-security,now 4.8.0-36.36~16.04.1 amd64 [installed]
linux-hwe-tools-4.8.0-39/xenial-updates,xenial-security,now 4.8.0-39.42~16.04.1 amd64 [installed]
linux-hwe-tools-4.8.0-41/xenial-updates,xenial-security,now 4.8.0-41.44~16.04.1 amd64 [installed,auto-removable]
linux-hwe-tools-4.8.0-42/xenial-updates,now 4.8.0-42.45~16.04.1 amd64 [installed,automatic]
linux-hwe-tools-4.8.0-44/xenial-updates,now 4.8.0-44.47~16.04.1 amd64 [installed,automatic]
linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04/xenial-updates,now 4.8.0.44.16 amd64 [installed,automatic]
linux-tools-generic-hwe-16.04/xenial-updates,now 4.8.0.44.16 amd64 [installed]

Only the newest one, of course.

Only install the non-automatic packages.
Because the rest will be installed…well…automatically…

Use CommandLine:

sudo apt install…

It's worth it. Hardware compatibility, newer drivers,…

Maybe, You want to install newest HWE-xserver, too?

If you be so kind, I'll give a try with both.

In the meantime I wonder, why isn't it updated automatically, neon is supposed to be based on Ubuntu LTS and it got an update.

It all depends on Ubuntu's Policy.

It's not chosen by KDE.

HWE-packages are offered by Ubuntu, but
HWE-support policy differs from non-HWE packages.

On the one hand, Ubuntu wants to support old, but stable
software.

On the other, they offer newer software, if You urgently need it.

Because it's LTS, Ubuntu's default priorities are with old but stable.

That's the right way to do it. I wouldn't criticize this.

I see.
One thing doesn't seem logical, why 16.04.2 upgrade doesn't get new kernel but 16.04.2 fresh install does. Moreover fresh 16.04.2 has HWE stack enabled by default and I can't find old 16.04 installation, they offer only 16.04.2 install on page and still it gets 5 year support. The news about it:
http://news.softpedia.com/news/ubuntu-1 ... 2758.shtml

I've installed linux-generic-hwe-16.04 and xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04 and all works fine, but it seems xorg version hasn't changed, still 1.18, what version do you have?

There is nice Ubuntu Kernel Upgrade Utility:
http://www.teejeetech.in/2016/04/ubuntu ... ility.html
it seems to work fine with neon and you get newest kernel possible.

The ukuu utility is no longer free.
The author removed it from launchpad and now only offers a closed source payed version.
My suggestion: stay away from that, you don't know what you install that way.
