Telegram desktop AppImage install.

Wed Apr 12, 2017 12:04 pm
I have tried to install the Telegram desktop AppImage in KDE Neon and even tried adding the .AppImage extension to the file, but I keep getting the following output:
Code: Select all
$ ~/Telegram/Telegram install
Fontconfig error: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/10-scale-bitmap-fonts.conf", line 72: non-double matrix element
Fontconfig error: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/10-scale-bitmap-fonts.conf", line 72: non-double matrix element
Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/10-scale-bitmap-fonts.conf", line 80: saw unknown, expected number
Fontconfig error: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/10-scale-bitmap-fonts.conf", line 72: non-double matrix element
Fontconfig error: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/10-scale-bitmap-fonts.conf", line 72: non-double matrix element
Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/10-scale-bitmap-fonts.conf", line 80: saw unknown, expected number

The process starts the Telegram desktop program and then exits out when I quit Telegram, but nothing gets installed as far as I can tell (I use the KDE Neon HUD) Any ideas?

AppImages are not 'installed'.

Simply download the one you want, make it executable and run it. The idea of AppImages is that they are completely self-contained ie they do not depend on any libs etc that you may, or may not, have installed.

Thanks for the replies. I can't say anything about the 32 bit version, but the 64 bit are definitely AppImages. That is the only thing available.

AppImages are 64 bit only.

To use, download the one you want - eg Etcher-1.0.0-beta.19-linux-x64.AppImage, which will go into your download folder.

Using Dolphin, go to the Download folder, right-click on the AppImage just downloaded and select Properties.

On the Permissions tab select "Is Executable", OK to confirm and exit.

Highlight+enter or double click the AppImage to activate it and the programme will run since it entirely self-contained. It is not installed anywhere so if you no longer wish to use it simply delete it.

Thanks. It is possible to install AppImages, which basically means that the AppImage shows up in the system. I have done that with MuseScore 2 and it shows up in the application menu and the HUD. My problem is exactly, that following the same procedure kicks up the posted errors and never "installs". The information posted bellow can be found at https://musescore.org/en/handbook/install-linux#AppImage-install:

Using command line options
Running the AppImage from the Terminal allows you to use various command line options. The AppImage has some special options in addition to MuseScore's normal command line options.

You will need to change directory (cd) to wherever the AppImage is saved your system, for example:

Code: Select all
cd ~/Desktop
./MuseScore*.AppImage *option*

Or give the path to the AppImage:

Code: Select all
~/desktop/MuseScore*.AppImage *option*

Use the "--help" and "man" options to get more information about the available command line options:

Code: Select all
./MuseScore*.AppImage --help   # displays a complete list of command line options
./MuseScore*.AppImage man      # displays the manual page (explains what the options do)

I believe the same procedure should be able to be used for Telegraph, as it is also an AppImage.

Don't see the point - why not just install musescore as a standard programme?

The whole point of an appimage is that it is completely self-contained adding nothing to the system it is used on and leaves nothing behind when deleted.

Dependency issues in KDE Neon. But back to Telegram :-) how do I get Telegram to show up in the HUD?
----
BTW, Telegram is only available as an AppImage. I just checked the 32 bit download and it is the same.

A bit of a cludge, but the best solution so far is to go into System Settings and set Telegram to start at startup.

Code: Select all
$ ./Telegram install
from the folder where the appimage is located will also work.
