GUI (auto)login stopped working

Mon Jun 19, 2017 1:19 am
I'm on a recently installed Neon from the neon-devedition-gitstable-20170523-1311-amd64 iso, everything's up to date AFAIK, & it seems I've done something to break logging on normally.

What happens now is that after boot, I'm on tty1 with a logon prompt. tty5's the same, & no tty8 is available. At first I thought the desktop was on another tty, but no. I can login & do startx to get to my normal desktop just fine, but it used to do this automatically.

I looked in Synaptic to see if I could reinstall kdm to maybe fix it, but I get zero results searching it by name. Apparently there's some other package handling login.

The only thing I can think of that might have caused this is that yesterday I purged around 2 dozen packages that were in Synaptic's 'auto-removable' section. I thought those were no longer necessary, so if that broke it I'd be a bit surprised.

Help is welcome, I'm at a loss here.

I advise you to use the stable version of Neon, usually the DEV version happens some bugs

First of all, the timestamp on this post is incorrect. I started this thread the 16th not the 19th. Somehow this forum's showing it as ~3 days later. Anyway...

I left the desktop up & running for a few days after encountering the issue. After 3-4 days of updates on a daily basis, whatever the problem was corrected itself.
