Hi guys!


Discover is a fantastic piece of work, but I think Muon should be included in the images by default as well. It looks nice, seems highly capable and it's informative.

So yeah, I wonder why isn't it included by default. Is there something wrong with it or what? Can't do what Discover can or what?

I prefer Muon over Discover as far as having more, and therefore searches are more precise. But.... Discover removes the entire package and dependencies. Muon does not.
Synaptic as far as I'm concerned is the superior package manager. But like Muon, when you remove or uninstall, you have to track down dependencies.
Do Not do what I did, and bounce back and forth between them. It somehow replicates ALL of the sources. Was a mess, lol.

Discover and Muon are similar, though not identical tools, and I think we like sticking with one tool per job on a default setup, much like Kubuntu has.
Muon does have its bugs and it does not seem to be as well maintained by developers, but really Discover is a software browser, while Muon is a package manager, which is more advanced. Most people are fine with Discover, but those of us who want can always install something else.

@Ubulindy Thanks. It sure looks better than Synaptic and it's KDE specific.

Are you sure about that? This would break any software you installed *after* it, that depended on the same things, or would also uninstall that later package
Also one of the things often broken in Muon is the search, lol

@claydoh Thanks. What I like about Muon is it's informative. It tells one what's under the hood. If it has its bugs, then those should be dealt with. Coming from a locked-down cough OS, I certainly appreciate a tool like Muon.

Every day I learn something. Neon sharpens the mind. Again, I like Discover but I like Muon as well. It's probably more prudent to stick with Discover. I'll tinker about it. Also, any further opinions are more than welcome.

If it's not being maintained it should maybe be purged from the repo? I wish someone would pick it back up.

Well, Muon is the KDE counterpart of Synaptic. It shouldn't be purged but fixed. I have high hopes for Neon. Oh, it's not free. My time is invaluable. At any rate, I want to switch some businesses to KDE Neon. Respective owners of those have showed great interest in Neon but its not yet fit for productivity or business. It's important for Neon to improve as fast as possible. We who love Neon have the tendency to be biased.

Search seems not to be working properly. If works great, then way do you want it purged from the repo? Don't get it.

Kernel: 4.8.0-56-generic x86_64 (64 bit)
Desktop: KDE Plasma 5.10.2 Distro: neon 16.04 xenial (user edition)

As I stated before. Matter of preference I suppose. I like details. Muon provides that. As does Synaptic.
Recently reformatted so this is a fresh install and when I just reinstalled Muon, in 5.10.2 it is borked. Search indeed does not work. And it seems settings are basically stripped to bare minimum. Before the reformat, I used Muon a lot. Where I ran into issues was using Muon, then I wanted to compare Synaptic because they look so similar, and bounced back and forth between Muon, Synaptic, and Discover. I was often able to find things in Synaptic I couldn't find in Muon (wierd), and some things just didn't show period in Discover. As I said before, somehow by using all 3 it replicated all the sources. What a mess. When I updated via cli it had nothing but errors. Made me go O_O
Anyways, there ya have it. Just my personal preference between the 3.
