I've used Neon for some time now. LOVE it. But, on EVERY system I've installed it on, the icon for "updates" is there and present for "updates" UNTIL the very first updates come in. Then it simply disappears, and you have to check the "blank space" for updates. This happens whether you keep the updates hidden under "status and notifications" or if you "show" it to be directly in the systray panel. Iv'e looked and looked for a way to "replace" the icon to no avail.
I did a reinstall recently ( had a triple boot wanted to rid of, blah blah ) , full wipe and fresh install. Same thing. Room mates laptop, same thing. Neighbors ... same.
Does anyone else have this same issue? I'm going to assume yes. How to fix?

I have not noticed this on my 2 Neon User systems.

So have I. So do I. Which are you referring to? User, I assume. Well, the icon comes up eventually in systray on my machine, no matter which I use. Try using apt update; the icon should come up, provided there are any updates.

Are you always updating packages with apt (or pkcon)?

The lower right icon is displayed when there is an update package. It will not always be displayed.
If the icon is displayed for a few seconds and hidden, it is inferred that there was no update package after checking the package.

Hi, I'm facing the same problem when other icon themes other than Breeze are installed. For example, I like very much "paper" theme, but when I enable it, It leaves me with a "blank" update icon. On the system tray I can see an empty space between the wifi indicator and the volume. When I click this empty space, it opens the update indicator dialog and it has the normal behaviour. Only it is not visible.

Exactly! Matter of fact, I'm so sure it's going to happen, the last few installs I've done for others, I let them know it will become invisible, and to check the space at the end of the systray, or the blank space in between other icons. And yes, it seems to happen once you move away from the default icons.
