hi,
i am using kde neon desktop on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS base. every thing is working fine except a weird black screen issue after a long idle time. let me explain in detail. I log in into the system after starting VM in VBox. I work for 5 minutes. Let us say after that I go back to host machine. I work there for some time. After that I come back to VM Kde-Neon, then it does not show any display. Just a black screen. I tried with lightdm and sddm. both are giving me same issues. Requesting help? thanks, harish pathangay |

They all (all editions) share that rock solid Ubuntu base. Which one? As they are different. Are you using some Neon edition proper (like User, User LTS, Dev Stable, Dev Unstable) or have you pulled in the a desktop on a plain Ubuntu base? I'm not sure what you mean.

Hi,
I followed the steps in the following url: https://gist.github.com/nihathrael/7429 ... 3269b3f95a I have a Lubuntu 16.04 installation in VBox. Then I open a terminal and did the following as suggested in the above URL. $ wget -qO - 'http://archive.neon.kde.org/public.key' | sudo apt-key add - $ sudo apt-add-repository http://archive.neon.kde.org/user $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install neon-desktop $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get upgrade $ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade I am looking for having KED-Neon Desktop in 16.04 Base system. I already have Lubuntu 16.04, so that this will be a good approach to what I am looking for. I need to have all the latest KDE-Neon running on top of LTS release of Ubuntu. That will be a very good system for me. I get the best of KDE and security updates from a LTS release. thanks, harish pathangay |

every functionality works so far with out errors.
playing songs, videos, text editing, libre office, screen shots etc.. you name it all feature works. except that one minor glitch. some how that screen locking feature only is creating some problem. leave the system idle for some long time, it should lock screen by itself, but rather than doing that it goes to blank screen. I of not want to download a new kde-neon iso. I mean I have it working all properly. for one glitch I do not want to down load 1.2 GB. what is causing the blank screen or how to work around it will also help. thanks, harish pathangay |

now it seems like it is working. but I need to observe it for 2-3 days to confirm.
all I did was change the sddm breeze theme to sddm maui theme. the login screen theme was changed. now it appears to be working properly. but then I need to observe it for 2-3 days to confirm. could it be a theme issue? do not know? thanks, harish pathangay |

Unless you're experimenting, it seems kinda futile because you can get the latest KDE software on top of Ubuntu LTS (16.04.x) by using a Neon image. If you use a Neon image (of your choice), you get this: 1. Ubuntu LTS base which gets updates of all sorts from Ubuntu (including security and whatnot) 2. The latest and continuously updated KDE software on top of Ubuntu LTS. I assume lxde is now completely gone, right? Or do you want to achieve a hybrid? Also, there's no guarantee it's gonna work on real hardware.
Okay, keep us updated but was it necessary to start off of Lubuntu?

okay. the issue again came back. so my change of sddm theme did not work. the issue is intermittent.
I already had a Lubuntu 16.04 installed. I do not want to down load 1.2 G of same 16.04 again. as a typical netizen, I searched google on how to do that, got a page [link given earlier] describing how to do that. I do not want to see kde-neon as a separate Linux distro , so thought I should be able to install and run without any major hiccups. and it is running well. I already said, playing songs, read write dvd, office work, mail checking, you name it every feature works and works amazingly. superb experience for me. this simple thing with login manager is giving me night mares. I mean I got every thing working and using it so happily. one little glitch is all I am facing. man I never expected that. minor but annoying issue. I am just not able to leave the screen idle. oh no. my bad....what else can I say. I ask for help but if it is some thing very badly going to take up time, just ignore my request. thanks, harish pathangay |

the choice for lubuntu is because it plays all my videos without screen tearing.
I have Linux mint, but it plays videos with screen tearing even after installing additional drivers, media codecs, Ubuntu extra packages etc. do not know what is problem there. thanks, harish pathangay |

Yeah, that must be annoying.
I understand now.
It might not be the same at all.
Yes and it sits on Ubuntu LTS. ![]()
The guy said it worked for him but it might not work for others, (as there are unpredictable factors such as those related to hardware, I suppose)
Virtual Box is Virtual Box.
You might wanna consider a Docker image. Don't know. https://community.kde.org/Neon/Docker Well, my advice is to download User and User LTS though and check if you have that issue on those. But perhaps someone else has a better advice. It's yet to be seen. However, I doubt that someone will download Lubuntu, get rid of lxde and install Neon on it. The best way to experience Neon is to use Neon itself. Then, If you are still having the same issue on Neon itself, that would be a good starting point. You would also find out whether Neon itself is tearing your screen or not. https://files.kde.org/neon/images/neon- ... n/current/ https://files.kde.org/neon/images/neon- ... n/current/ Regards

hi,
that is a problem with Linux community. do not take it in a bad way. some times I feel I see a fragmented Linux community than a truly open source community. Every body wants to have their own flavour of Linux and support only that. Even if it is same code base and all they do not want to support even other flavours. You are not using mine I am not going to support you. I do understand limited resources and focus of each and every project, but then there is no ownership on OS in totality. Your problem is not KDE, it has to do with VBox or Kernel or some thing else. Exactly what I am looking for is a community who can help Linux in General as an OS in totality not my piece of software or your piece of software. May be I am over thinking or just ignore my thoughts. It just I wanted to share in a polite way. Do not take it in a bad sense. Customer using the product will mostly feel like that, I believe. I am going to try MAUI - did some reading, it is based on KDE Neon so going to give a try. I already have those images. So just do not want to down load new iso. Also as a humble input, KDE Neon should be available as a complete desktop environment like package like install. I am not sure if I find some screen tearing issue, will they help me out as KDE Neon project goal is only KDE and not focussing on OS issues or VBox issues. I am not a Linux geek and all, please take my thoughts as just spontaneous sharing of feelings on Linux. I hold no offense or hatred against any software or opens source or community. thanks, harish pathangay |

ok what I am trying to say is the following.
One Piece of Software with all it dependencies and version requirements satisfied should run on the hardware in a very similar way. if not exact, at least as close to exact as possible. It is already doing that but may be with some minor issues like I am facing. I am just asking do you feel the same kind of glitches here and there when using similar distributions in same hardware? thanks, harish pathangay |

this might be a very stupid thing. but if it works, I am more than happy.
what I did was - Disable Screen Locking Feature under system settings. My Linux will never lock itself even if idle for unlimited time. that way I will not get the black screen, I think. If SDDM or login manager or screen lock is the issue, then hope it will resolve. Since I am using VBOX, my windows will any case lock itself. that is enough for me. Hope my strategy works. thanks, harish pathangay |

disabling screen locking also did not work.

Get rid of Windoz and install on real hardware. You don't need Windoz. I got rid of it as soon as I realized I'm not the customer but the merchandise. Tried to reinstall Windoz but it wouldn't reinstall. People say I have to click on "I agree" for it to install and I just don't agree to what's written in the EULA. No Sir. And cheer up a little. The glass is always half full and not half empty.

I get it. I mostly think the problem is just Linux itself from a end user perspective I am saying. I am not Linux expert.
My Expectation with a system is like I install base OS any Linux any release. But I want my software / applications to be constantly updated. But there are dependencies which will prevent that or it might break the system. So there is not a simple end user way of doing that kind of activity. One scenario I am looking is my GTK is 3.18, nut I want to upgrade it to 3.22 A simple end user way of doing this is not there I guess. The impact of GTK Upgrade will be seen in other OS components/software and system applications. it might work well or in some cases mess/break your system. you need to know a lot of advanced stuff or certain things are just not possible. If any distribution out there can get like that kind of flexibility that will be awesome. I do not want containers/dockers , additional learning curve. Not criticizing but Just throwing some thoughts. thanks, harish pathangay |
