What on earth is that all about? :o

https://github.com/Plasmoner/Beyond-my- ... n/issues/1

Note: I have not messed with my Neon installation. I do not have an explanation for it.

Re: This Defies My Comprehension

An effective communication in a forum thread means:
- a subject which contains a brief summary of the problem
- a text which adds more details; linking to an external site is fine, but the problem should be clear even by reading the content of the text.

This forum post does not follow any of the above.

Description: I opened Discover and browsing around I stumbled upon a lot of Cinnamon-specific elements. A lot. Being puzzled, I tried to install what was described as:

Applets

Manage Cinnamon applets

Innovative and comfortable desktop

Only that. When the installation completed, Discover reported that lots of other Cinnamon-specific elements had been installed of which I could identify none as really installed. What's Plasma got to do with Cinnamon?

Hope I fulfilled the guidelines. What do you think? What's the matter with Discover? I have not done anything but using Neon properly. What is the Cinnamon stuff in Discover? Do you have a theory?

I posted even more shots. I've kinda lost my confidence.

Discover is a software manager which shows you the available packages for your distribution (almost all of them, they need to have some special metadata). There is nothing strange in finding packages non related to Plasma.

Cool bro. But KDE Neon is not Linux Mint. If I want Linux Mint, I go to Linux Mint. I think this is not right. The truth of the matter is I fail to understand what Discover is. It's not supposed to be a bazaar of elements from any and all desktop environments but KDE stuff. This does not seem natural to me. Or acceptable.

Perhaps someone can give us the accurate description of Discover as a concept? What is it? What's its purpose? Don't serve me no metadata. I'm really >:(

I've come to KDE because I like KDE. Metadata. Really.

Remember that KDE Plasma itself is only another
among several installable Desktop Environments.

The Operating System and its packages are still there.

Some of them are used as-is in Ubuntu LTS, some are modified, and some
are added by KDE maintainers to make the newest KDE Plasma
runnable.

You can - for example - install this:

$ apt search '^cwm'
Sorting... Done
Full Text Search... Done
cwm/xenial,now 5.6-4 amd64 [installed]
lightweight and efficient window manager for X11

It's my second favorite Desktop Environment.

This has nothing to do with any KDE.
After installation, You can select it before logging
in as an alternative instead of KDE Plasma.

Use it for testing the X Window System's server, for example.

KDE neon is no Operating System.
The Operating System (Ubuntu LTS) can have many different
Desktop Environments installable. This is normal in GNU/Unix.

You don't have only one available.

And this is a good thing.

Hi Harald, just noticed your presence on the forum. With all due respect, please tell us a word or two about the issue this thread is dealing with. How do you see it?

NoNameNoBlame explained it perfectly. If you are having trouble understanding what he is saying I suggest you read up on: linux eco system, distribtuions, distribution package management, desktop environments, appstream metadata. There's more to the world than Plasma.

Annoyed with bbcode since 1999.

I'll do that. Much appreciated. But it's still strange I cannot pull in an up-to-date K3B via Discover. Also, shouldn't Discover lock out those alien elements, as this is not Cinnamon ... ?

Can you please not post edit comments as replies. Just add a line to your original post and say what you edited. Like this

It should be visible in Discover (it is on Fedora 25); K3b provides an appdata file (which is used by Discover.

Also, shouldn't Discover lock out those alien elements, as this is not Cinnamon ... ?

As explained above, this is irrelevant. They are packages available for your distribution.

With all due respect the K3B visible to me says:

K3b 2.0.3 (c) 1999-2010 Sebastian Trug et al.
(the good part is that it works although it's an old(er) version.

Also, I fail to understand how reference to Fedora is relevant, as the present thread is dealing with Neon and not Fedora.

As explained above, this is irrelevant. They are packages available for your distribution.

In context with the Plasma Desktop, those packages lack any relevance whatsoever.

PS: I think all of this has been relevant feedback in both directions though. Thanks.
