Plasma 5.10.5 update: black screen

Fri Aug 25, 2017 4:35 pm
Hi,
after the very last update (Plasma 5.10.5) after logging in only thing I have is a black screen where I can just move the mouse pointer.
Kwin works, Plasma process has stalled, if you continue it (from ksysguard) cpu goes up 75% and system goes wild.
Any idea on how to solve or debug this very nasty problem?
I can switch tty, but cannot launch any app, plasma doesn't load.
Thanks

1) What's the file path of 'ksysmon'?
2) How long did You wait to be sure nothing happens any more?

If You get a black screen after login try if
a) 'krunner' (Alt-F2 or Alt-SPACE)
b) 'yakuake' (F12)
work.

If this works:
In Session Management, deactivate all restart actions.
Then logoff-logon.

yeah, ksysguard ;D

ok, I can access to krunner, it KINDA works a bit, went to session managament but had nothing to change, 'cause I already default to start with a new empty session..

killed plasmashell process, but kstart plasmashell does nothing.. :-\

But I can access to a debug console at least, so somebody can guide me to solve this problem.

Just keep in mind that I didn't uninstall anything from base system. It's Plasma after the update, and next update will be in October..! :'(

the problem is that I'm using this installation to work with audio daily, and last thing I want is to reinstall and set up everything all over again (since it worked beautifully just before the last update).

So.. any clue/suggestion? (Intel Broadwell i3)

so.. I removed .cache .config and .local dirs and.. on reboot it worked.
this thing happened many times, what's wrong with it?

Then the first thing I did on login was to customize the systray. Plasma immediately crashed, black screen, again in the same conditions.
Something has really gone wrong here :\

1/2) General:
Create new account. Login into it.
a) Same Problems? Faulty Update.
b) No Problems? Faulty Home Directory.

2/2) Special:
In Your broken Home Directory, search for
files/directories not belonging to Your User Account Name.
Use 'find'-tool. Especially, if You have somehow
used Your homedir as 'root'-user, this may have caused
problems.

so: Faulty update.
don't know what went wrong, just bought 2 weeks ago an SSD drive, so fresh install, and apt doesn't complain about any conflict or whatsoever..

probably it's a bug, I guess

May I ask You to do this:

$ mount | grep ' / '
/dev/sdb2 on / type btrfs (rw,noatime,space_cache,subvolid=5,subvol=/)

and

$ mount grep ' /home '

and post Your output?

Probably, won't help at all. But let's see.

GENIUS

I rarely reboot the machine. Last time I added nosuid,noexec,nodev flags to /home in /etc/fstab, like I did in Arch years ago for securty reasons.
did the updates and rebooted and system didn't work anymore.
off course I forgot the change and now I reverted them and everything's allright!

THANK YOU NoNameNoBlame for your help, your time, your commitment!

so.. still NEON is the best distro nowadays imho :D

Hello

I have the same issue, blank/black desktop after update plasma.
I found a solution on som KDE site/forum that worked for me.

in the file .xinitrc add the following lines at the top of file after the file info

XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=${XDG_CONFIG_DIRS}:/etc/xdg:/usr/local/etc/xdg:/usr/local/etc/xdg/xfce
export XDG_CONFIG_DIRS

XDG_DATA_DIRS=${XDG_DATA_DIRS}:/usr/share:/usr/local/share:/usr/local/share/gnome
export XDG_DATA_DIRS

My look like
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)

XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=${XDG_CONFIG_DIRS}:/etc/xdg:/usr/local/etc/xdg:/usr/local/etc/xdg/xfce
export XDG_CONFIG_DIRS

XDG_DATA_DIRS=${XDG_DATA_DIRS}:/usr/share:/usr/local/share:/usr/local/share/gnome
export XDG_DATA_DIRS

userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
.
.
.
.
Good luck
