upgrade Gnome apps in KDE Neon

Thu Sep 14, 2017 10:11 pm
Is there a way to upgrade the gnome apps in Neon KDE? I use Evolution a lot and the version that comes from the software install app is 3.18. I would like to upgrade to 3.24 or 3.26 now that is released it fixes a few annoying bugs that are in 3.18.

Thanks

Non-plasma software is going to be whatever is in Ubuntu 16.04's repos. There may be a ppa someone has created for this purpose, but if newer Evolution versions are tied to Gnome or Gtk versions, it may not be easily done.

However:

One thing I might suggest is checking if Ubuntu GNOME has a backports PPA. This might allow you to drag in some of the new GNOME Apps from a 17.04-ish era? Just a thought, I'm not entirely sure how well suited it might be.

They do not, nor could I find any other PPA with a fresher version of Evolution for 16.04 I believe that the versions of the dependencies that are needed simply are not available in 16.04, Upgrading the gtk core libraries likely would break too many things.
This situation is where snaps and flatpaks are very useful.

I was able to use Flatpak to install Evolution 3.26 on the system. It took a while since it is a big package but works well. The only issue I see is that flatpak does not comply with the GTK Theme in Plasma so I have to live with default icons and theme for evolution vs other GTK apps in Neon. Not a big issue but still woud be nice to have a unified theme in all the apps.
