Hi,
I just switched to KDE Neon. I wanted to reconnect with the KDE environment, and I wanted simplicity, "purity". This distribution suits me perfectly, with its principle of regular updating. However, I have a question. Under Ubuntu, Kubuntu etc. I was used to installing the proprietary Nvidia driver via a graphical interface. I have a powerful Nvidia card ![]() Is it necessary? Is the Nouveau Driver sufficient? Thank you very much, Have a good day |

It depends on what you want to do. If you only want to watch some videos, surf the web and don't play high class 3D games which demand the last frames of your graphicscard then you almost good to go with the free and open source nouveau driver. I heard in the past some complains about tearing with the driver on some videos. So better check this out aswell. I am writing this on a perfectly fine running laptop with nvidia chip and nouveau running just fine but you'll never know it might run differently on your specific hardware. If you want to play demanding 3D games or use demanding 3D Apps and need CUDA technology you are better of by installing the nvidia driver. You should be able to install the kubuntu-driver-manager which is the graphical user interface for easily switching/installing the proprietary driver. |

It does also depend on the exact NVidia card you're running.
For example, my GeForce GTX 660 card won't work with Nouveau for more than a couple of minutes without a hard lock-up, with no ability to drop to a terminal as the keyboard is frozen. It took 4 or 5 attempts to install Neon before I could get far enough to install the NVidia driver, after which the lock-ups ceased. However, I do now get a small amount of "tearing " when watching videos with the NVidia driver - but thats a very minor issue, at least my system is usable and otherwise very stable. |

Thread perfect for me.
Also, I installed Kde Neon today and search for installer nvidia drivers. Its possible install drivers with console, but with kubuntu-driver-manager I think its better, also, install intel micro code for example. Regards! |
